Bit the bullet and got some hosting from acid.ie after reading though the posts here.

Sweet deal imho, the 1 gb default traffic per month traffic is about right for my site and is a nice price, kudo's to the guys there.

Anyhow, can now play about with different boards, installed Ikonboard 302, which all went smoothly initially apartfrom the fact that the images didnt untar during install even though it was reported they did, which was odd (did CHMOD the file and folder attributes correctly..i think).

So just untared them locally and upped them to the relevant folder and all works reasonably well so far.

Anyhow, looking around the web i see rave reviews for the yaBB board (or so it seems) and like the default look on the various yaBB demo pages.

The install looks straightforward enough so will probably give it a go after i'm finished playing around with the Ikonboard settings late on post paddies weekend hangover Monday :)

Wonder what you have to say as to the pro's and con's of one over the other in your experience?

Did consider php but speaking to a friend that hosts one such board, he says its pretty high maintenence and suggested one of these two also.

vBulletin isnt an option given current finances.

    Thanks.

YaBB - CGI version is easy to install, maintain and customise. Plus there are a lot of free addons available

YaBBse - PHP/MySQL version. VERY EASY to install. Customisation is easy. There aren't that many addons available yet.

I don't know why your friend thinks the PHP/MySQL version is high maintenance. It isn't.

I've used Ikonboard for years, it's the best free software there is IMO. I'm having trouble running CGI scripts on my current host though, so I'm using phpBB at the moment, a nice piece of software, but very clumsy from an admin point of view. I plan to snap up IBForums PHP as soon as it's released, it's a PHP spin off of Ikonboard, written by the team who developed Ikonboard, and who recently left their jobs at JEG(ikonboards owner), as far as I know. According to some tests they did, it smacks around the competition performance-wise, including vBulletin :) That Matthew Mecham's a genius...

In the end, i have installed, phBB2 RC3 as well given the positive comments i've got about it and have gone with it.

Unbelievably simple to install and so far bug free, nice looking too.

Have to say that Ikonboard was far and away the most difficult to install , i don't know if this was just because it was the first one of these i installed or what, yaBB had a couple of (known) bugs that were resolved reading through their help forums.

phpBB2 just worked first time :)

Thanks for the advice everyone...now to start customizing ...

Heh, i especially like having dev's old avatar all to myself (delusions of grandness :) )

I do do plan on customizing it considerably, but just small things for the moment, as you can no doubt see on the main site that there is a heck of a lot of work that needs doing, have to learn how to use dreamweaver, notepad is getting boring :)

Also struggling with the Joys of Visual Basic 6 in college atm...there just isn't enough hours in the day :)
