Maths for kids.

    Listening to my niece do her maths homework today and getting stuck on simple things (well not stuck but taking a massive amount of time to do it).

    One thing I could never handle as a kid was trying to remember my times tables(in fact I still couldn't call them out), so rather memorising "1x1 is .., etc" I use patterns to memorise my maths.

    For example.

    6x7. She would start from 1x6 and work her way up.

    I would probably take as long so I break the sum into smaller chunks and then add the chunks together.

    So I would do in my head (7x10 / 2) + 7 which oddly enough is easier for me. :)

    So when I would ask her each part of that sum she could answer it very quickly and come to the correct answer but had problems breaking the maths problem up in that way.

    Then I tried to explain other patterns.
    adding all digits = 9, number is divisble by 9.
    x10 = +0 (easy),
    multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
    Subtracting is easier to add in chunks. eg. 100 -27 is easier with 27 + 3 (to make 30) + 70.

    My question is, is there an actual name for that kind of maths? So I can do a search on it?
