have you set the cd as a dual speed in the properties.
    does the controller work?
    does the cd rom work?
why dont you just get a new system?

by the way, the only time ive ever had problems with a cd rom and drivers was when using win95 and i had to write a batch file to boot into dos so that i could use me cd rom to install win95...
otherwise, i suspect your problem is something else.
if you boot with a 98 cd in the drive, does it recognise ti and ask if you want to install 98,
or does it bypass it and just load up whatever is on your hard drive. if it does this, then you have a problem with either you controller, your cdrom, or whatever is conecting them, or the motherboard i guess.
does the cdrom work when you put it on ide 1 as master?
come on james, you know how to trouble shoot a machine...
    have you got stoopider?

    no, dont answer that....

no the cd and controller work ..
it's just win 95 is being a pain and won't let me access the cd-rom in explorer .
I've installed 98 ( copyed the setup on the drive)
but we need the cd rom working on it.
anyway thankx eamo for the helpful suggestions ( and no i'm not being sarcastic this time)
you back in the office yet ???

make a win98 boot disc and use that to boot into dos with cd support.
you can install win98 from there...
