I want the names of books people think are good because I need something to read. Don't mention anything by Tolkien or Douglas Adams because I've read 'em. (Yes, all of them)

George RR Martin's Song of Ice And Fire series is amazingly good and highly recommended if you like gritty, realistic adventure books.

Katherine Kerr's Celtic/Tolkien-ish Devery series (currently 7 books) is also very very good.

    Classic Standalones :

1984 - beautifully written and mindblowing stuff

The Exorcist - the only book thats ever scared me

The Clan of the Cave Bear - Just read book one - the rest of the series doesn't come close

    - Brian Lumley, The Necroscope Series (It should keep you busy for a while)

    - Stephen Donaldson, The Unbeliever Series

    - Michael Moorcock The Elric, Corum.... Cycle

    - Frank Herbert: Dune Series, a Classic

    - Irving: 'A Prayer for Owen', (and all the others)

I finally managed to get back on the internet. Eircom ripped up all out roads phone lines. God I hate Eircom, don't we all hate Eircom? Anyway, these should keep me busy for a while but if anyone thinks anymore are good I'll take their names as well.

...well, Catch-22 of course (if you haven't read it yet)...phukin brilliant book...I would have said Douglas Adams too, but um, you told me not to, so...I won't...

I haven't read any of Pratchett's stuff but I hear it's pretty funny (kind of bizarre/Adams type feel to it too)

    -- Cryptonomicon, Neal Stephenson

-- The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follett

    -- Assassin's Apprentice, Robin Hobb

Those are the best that spring to mind that haven't already been meationed above. I'd really recommand you read Tad Williams the man is genius. Also Martins is brilliant, but you aren't doing he's work justice by calling it gritty. Its more like he's casting the generic fantasy world in a more realistic mannar. If you're looking for fast, furious and gritty fantasy check out Glen Cook's work.
