Just wonder what are the disadvantages to a person linking to a personal advantar that isn't on the same server as the messageboard being hosted. Is it just about control of the images or does it have an effect on page loading times?

if the picture is huge, filesize wise, it would take a while to render.
if the picture is huge, dimensionally, it would probably mess up the layout of your page, and would almost definitely change the overall style of the site.
if the picture is hosted with a bad (slow, high downtime) host then the picture might take a while to render anyway or it might not appear at all.
If the picture is something that you would rather not see on your site (eg porn) then thats also a disadvantage.

Thats all i can think of but some of them are solvable, I would suggest you follow boards.ie's example, and if people want an avatar that isnt their already, they look for it and prepare the filename in the format you want then suggest it, and you get to approve it before it goes up.

Screw the users, don't allow 'em at all. Avatars are for lusers anyway. I have everything turned off on my forum. They're lucky I allow them to post. :)

Another issue is that users can link to totally unacceptable photos/images. We recently experienced this on DannyMorrison.com, where an individual linked to a very explicit image.

All these points are true. However there are fourm boards which have sucessfully intigrated custom Avatars (some dont even have any premade)

The majority of users on boards.ie know what can / cant be posted. Img sigs are enabled, if ppl can produce custom sigs with out any offencive material, its safe that say it'll be the same story with avatars.

On the size issue, have a set size, say 50*50 pixels for example. And only allow certin types on files .jpg ,.gif ,.png
