I need some opinions, and where else to get them but on the phantom message board :)
I have heard and gave a fair play to the slasher/metal music stuff, and I just cant see the draw there.
can one of you fans tell me what the appeal is to the screaching guitar and screaming voices are? I cant make out the words and the instruments seem to all banging together with the screams of the "singer".
I have tried to see the "music' there but just cant get into it.
can someone give me thier insight into why it is good?

    tanks :lick:

Lily the lure of metal is the way the artists can play their instruments.Take for example metal/speed guitar players. If you look closely at the music form of any decent song you can see that it is written in a classical way yet played at a much faster pace.As for the lyrics if you listen enough you can actually accustom yourself to the words that are actually been sung.Ok I do agree that some metal around at the minute actually sounds like everything out of sync and some lunatic screaming into a mike. But listen to some of the older(better )stuff like Metallica,Megadeth,Slayer,Iron Maiden,AC/DC,Testament,Black Sabbath etc.and you find a kind of attraction to the music ie.the beat, the lyrics the whole Metal thing.Ok us metallers had a bad reputation for being Dirty smelly long haired rockers whose trousers were too tight and suffered from acne etc.But metal was and always will be one of the most popular types of music around.

Richie took the words straight outta my mouth. Its mainly thte instruments that attracts listeners. The vocals are just a small addition to the music to give a more energetic feel to the music. They really aren't that bad once you listen to them carefully enough. Another attraction is the energy at the live shows. This is a HUGE factor in why we listen to the music and is probably one of the many reasons theres more "boys than girls" at the shows. You don't often see girls in the centre of the pit throwing the men around. Although I seen it happen at Tattoo the Planet.

Its mainly the energy in the music that is the attraction. Nothing can match it.

I'll give you a little tip on how to get into the vocal side of things... When you listen to the music and vocals. Try and have the lyricsheet in front of you while listening to the songs and read along with the vocals. And you'll go "oh... well that makes sense..."

One other thing... try and stay away from the nu-metal end of things. Some of the lyrics in those songs don't make ANY sense at all. Which is why Korn don't print out lyric sheets methinks.

And to back up that statement (indirectly at any rate), who here can tell me (before I answer) who the biggest selling band of all time are?

    Aaagh....

The Nolans.....Now you have me humming "Im in the mood for dancing" in my head. The trauma of Saturday night TV shows with The Nolans and Bacchara (won the Eurovision for Luxembourg - now why can I remember that, and not the definition of liberalism!). Yes sir I can boogie as they would say in their sparkly dresses.

On the Metal topic, I have to say that I would never have been a fan of much metal stuff. But Ive forced myself to listen to Ray McGowans show (Thursdays 9-11pm on Phantom) and can grudginly admit that as mentioned below, the musicianship is amazing. Speaking as someone who has difficulty playing the triangle, I am impressed. Still can't deal with the really heavy stuff though.

Coleen, Denise and I cant remember the other sisters names. Make it stop.

WOW, Thanks for all the feedback.
It's not the old stuff I have a problem with, i quite enjoy that (led zep, metallica, etc..) It's the nu metal stuff from bands whose names are not that well known (by me anyway). I dont mind korn or tool, I like them. It's that stuff where all they do is scream in the microphone...perhaps I should have said that before, sorry :O
But I do appreciate all of the info from everyone!
    Tanks a lot! :cheeky:

    Oh My Gosh

Petey Check this out. I was curious bout Nolan#3 and had a look and......heeehee....found out that they collaborated with motorhead on a song!

    There was this question:

could any one tell me what the song was called that motorhead and the nolan sisters recorded together, and what the group name they went under.

Then a load of replies including:

The song was called "Don´t do that" and was recorded in 1980 by "The Young and Moody Band", this consisted of Lemmy(Bass),Mickey Moody(ex-Whitesnake), Bob Young (Status Quo-roadie), Cozy Powell and three of the Nolan sisters. This track can be found on the compilation: Motörhead "From the vaults".

I think I was on to something........this is uncanny.

Oh it was Denise, Coleen and Linda by the by

Thought you'd appreciate my find!! I can't stop laughing.....

Ugh... Cradle of Filth?? To tell you the truth I cant listen to that kind of stuff at all. I know a few people that are into it and I think they are quite sad I think theyre only into it because its being "rebellious" if you know what I mean. Those skater/goth kids...

Or maybe youre on about The Great Southern Trendkill by Pantera where Phil screams his lungs out at the start of the song. I honestly think thats just for a laugh, aswell as bands like Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus. I listen to those songs just for a laugh.

Suicide Note Pt. II, by Pantera however is a different story. There is only agression in his vocals in that song. I think its quite neat because he is just showing us his wide variety of vocal ability, which I think is the best in the world because he can sing with melody, scream, "cookie monster" vocals... you name it.

Could you give us the name of a few of the bands you are on about and then we could tell you.

nice example with pantera there and phils varying vocals, just listen to sucide note pt I, followed by pt II... tis amazing.....

personally, on the whole metal subject, some of it, to me, is just peeps screaming and banging on stuff ... but bands like metallica, pantera, iron maiden, etc they prove that they don't only need fast thrashy songs (although they are amazing)...
like my favourite pantera song is hollow (from Vulgar Display Of Power), its got everything in one song... just have a listen to that whole album....stop rambling...stop it....

ya know phil anselmo is in about 11 bands...WOW!!

cradle of filth - really like their music/hate dani filth (singer)/he's such a wankhead!!!

like at tatoo the planet they had that classical singer with them and the music/ i thought it was great (except for dani)

you see, i dont really have anything new to add...

    just waffling and rambling...

lily you shud go to ozzfest coz the whole live metal thing is an amazing experience and theirs some varying acts on too...

and btw, anyone ever heard of a band called team experience, it has them down for ozzfest on www.entertainment.ie

but then again i'm not really a metal head...no long hair...no acne...no tighter than tight jeans...not even a little ear ring....

and i listen to non metal music along with the metal....

    hmmmmm....

do ya ever wonder if ya belong anywhere???

    hmmmmmm....

I'm going to kill you! :p

    1. There's absolutely no link between Skater and Goth. I'm sure Bauhaus never done a song called "Heaven is a Halfpipe"...

    2. You're calling me sad? Shall I post that pic of Pantera again!?

    3. Cradle of Filth used to be a damn good band! Listen to the first four albums, and ignore that latest peice of crap offerings that was popular with the nu-metal kids.

    4. I thought you liked bands like In Flames and At The Gates. It's pretty much the same vocal style.

    5. This:

I do like In Flames and At the Gates...

Anders Fridén's (In Flames vocalist) vocals aren't as high pitched as Dani Filth's and I can't really see a resembleance there. Anders has melody in his vocals unlike Dani's. I have cousins that listen to dance (the ones that would normally label metal as ****e) and they said his vocals were quite good. And I'd bet if they had heard Dani's vocals they probably would have wrecked the cd player.

Tomas Lindberg's (At the Gates) vocals are quite similar and I felt that was the only negative part of the band. I'm a big fan of the music not the vocals. Although he sounded quite good on Slaughter of the Soul. Again, he doesn't have the high pitch squeals that Dani manages to do in every song. I really hate that.

    It's the same style.
I know they're not as high pitched, but it's the same kind of distorded vocal.

And the same with pretty much ALL Black Metal bands too.

As has already been said, I like metal for the talent in the music, the energy, the rawness of it all, and, well, it's just what gets me going!.....and it does something to my insides...

You can't always explain why you like something, to the extent that it needs to be explained.

For instance (this may seem like a dumb example, but there is a point to it), why are people attracted to certain colours? You can't always explain it, you just are!...emm, yeah, that didn't go down too well...

    enough.

Ugh... IRISHLILY24 you picked a nice topic to start :))
    Ok I’ll take it from
It's that stuff where all they do is scream in the microphone...
that you are talking about death and black metal forms..
well I’m a big death metal fan. And no I don’t have long hair/acne/tight jeans or have the whole leathers thing going...
The allure of death metal is a difficult one..For me there are a few attractions

The technicality of the music (technical death metal..Eg Cryptopsy, Quo Vadis, Martyr, Morbid Angel) is quit amazing..They have NO peers in the world..The only type of artist that comes close to the speed/talent would be jazz

the lyrics.. i know this sounds like a contradiction, but in (most) of the death i listen to the lyrics are really intelligent(no it's not I want to kill you)they usually deal with issues around us in the world..Greed, political issues, people etc

Melodic Death metal is the other reason..Although death is an acquired taste, some of the stuff is REALLY melodic. I suggest Opeth and Quo Vadis

if you are on about the other type of screaming into a microphone(screamcore/trash metal)well I’m not really a fan
and now for the flame wars :))

Richie, you have put it exactly. The metal scene is and always will be the best. When you go to your your first metal/nu metal gig you will feel all types of stuff, but the energy of the crowd is amazing and the LIVE band gives off that energy too us. Buy a really old album from like way back in the early 80's. Something like Metallica's "kill 'Em All" album. Sit and listen to it. it is what metal is all about- good lyrics,a singer who is brilliant, the drummer who is so powerfull and of course their is the solos of guitar/bass. Try to just listen to the singer first drain out all the instruments and then bring instruments back and well words can't really describ it but it makes you just turn it up loud. hope that makes any sense to you. And Death metal is the only type of metal that "screams through the mic"

pete reed, you always make me laugh out loud, thankfully today i was at home where no one could look in wonder at me

because i am sad and am pretty sure there was another nolan sister...i tried looking them up on altavista, and they have nothing on the nolans! fancy that...

so being even sadder i looked up im in the mood for dancing (which is possibly the most hard song to get out of your head after murder on the dance floor)..but no luck, only a chance to buy the album...

i lvoed the way they had the lead singer, linda nolan, on the line up in never mind the buzzcocks a few years ago and then 2 years later had the youngest sister, colleen (the troublemaker) on as a guest....

    nothing at www.thenolans.com either
i think im taking this a bit too far

Well... I got Pantera when they first put out a real record in 1990 which was Cowboys from Hell. It was a well soft enough album to tell you the truth. They then gradually got heavier with Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, The Great Southern Trendkill and Reinventing the Steel and I've grown with all the records.

What I'm saying is that you can't just jump into the metal scene. Especially not bands like Pantera, whose last few records were REALLY heavy. You need to gradually build up to the music like I did. Try listening to Cowboys From Hell by Pantera and then once you grow into that then listen to Vulgar Display of Power then you should slowly but surely get into the music.

Do you know what I mean?

Getting into metal in the late 80's and hearing Master of Puppets and ....and justice for all by Metallica was what made me want to play guitar....

For alot of people they got into playing instruments by listening to Punk Rock style bands and being attracted to how realitivley easy it was to play songs by the Ramones or whoever without having to be that proficent on an instrument......but I always liked the fact that stuff like Metallica or Pantera was way too far ahead of me at the time to play, it made to push yourself that bit harder to learn to play stuff that was out of your reach....you should always be pushing to play that bit better, more melodic, better phrasing speed, or feel ect,......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Ruaidhri

hey now wait a minute isent that what Danny Carey says all the time(you know the tool drummer)

but yeah metal live shows are the best,i've always said that all the Good metal bands are better live than on album(of course it's the opposite for pop :P )

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 106 ✭✭screamager

bands with screaming vocals are always gonna be something you just like or dont like. i haven't got a ****in clue what enya is singin in half her songs but people still love her. one of the best heavy bands around at the moment is Dillinger Escape Plan...if their vocals weren't what they are the whole experience would be lost, its just a pure rush of unbridled anger and emotion (they're playin in eamonn dorans in may and their album just got a full release).

and how the **** are motorhead gonna fill the rds, its massive! they played vicar street last. bet that gig will be cancelled from low ticket sales. and none of them other bands are even big names.
