Eircom have updated their ADSL info page (http://www.adsl.ie/ - thanks to the IEDR for that BTW).

Three plans. Low end is the classic 512/128/3GB cap, but down a little to 89 euro (all prices ex-VAT of course). Mid range 1Meg/256/6GB cap at 139 euro. Top end the same speed uncapped for the princely sum of 169 euro.

Connection charge is 165 euro in each case.

No mention of rollout schedule as far as I can see beyond "will be launched on a roll out basis".

    Sounds good

Isn't that terrible? After like 7 months of negotiating with the regulator the price has dropped only €20 roughly, they still want to charge an extortionate price and they haven't even removed/raised the cap!

At this stage im so pissed off with my crappy 56k connection and waiting around ill take it at that price

Then you have more money than sense IMHO ;) sorry!

I just got off the phone with eircom and they told me:
They dont yet know the release date:
"Another two weeks or two months "
but i was told that something is happening in there. They have to then run tests on my telephone line to make sure it is able to handle ADSL. Hopefully it will be soon.

At least the prices have come down though :)

Can someone give me a phone number for eircom adsl?

I've been trying the old: 1800 202275 since 6pm and it's just ringing off to the answering machine. ^_^

Well if you got internet bills like im getting then it would make sense to take these prices

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

I rang the 1800221021 number. The answering machine was there for about 10 seconds then someone picked up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 857 ✭✭✭kamobe

and they release it with a cap - *sigh*

€89 a month, still a rubbish price, and STILL WITH A CAP!! *strangles random passing stranger* they can take their modem back....

    Nice negotiating ODTR...

OK. Im going to get one of the DSL products...not sure which one yet...

I also will be keeping my Highspeed line for games... (DSL is terrible for pings)

So my question is do you also have to pay rental on the PSTN line that you get in? (The one you will be using to upgrade to ADSL) ?

This is going to add up to be too much :(

    Short answer: Yes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 120 ✭✭Felix Randel

That's a pretty stupid thing to do, I mean isdn isn't going to have that great a ping advantage over ADSL, if any. You cant have them on the same line which means your paying rental on both(yes you still pay rental on the line as its eircom.net not eircom line selling adsl) and with rental set to hit 20 euro per month soon your talking 80 euro per bill before you even make a call, then another 200 on top of that for ADSL (your billed every other month) and your talking in the region of 300 euro to 350 each bill just for general use.

I don't care how good the game play is or how excellent the porn your downloading is, anybody who pays this type of money for what is basically general service, is a muppet.

I am on the trials and they can take back their modem and splitter if that's the price the want to charge

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,025 ✭✭✭yellum

If you want adsl on an exiting isdn line, you have to downgrade to a normal line.

If you want dsl on an exiting phone line you still have to pay rental. The line is the exact same, but whats sent down it is different. So if you get in another line, its more rental fees to Eircom.

Good news ... they have reduced ISDN rental so now two channels costs less than two analogue lines.

Bad news ... you pay POTS rental as well as ADSL

The pings on ADSL are between 80-120...which isnt good enough when your used to 30-60

BUT ISDN is terrible for downloads and isnt always on.

    Woe is me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,438 ✭✭✭TwoShedsJackson

Between myself and my flatmate (both big Internet users) I'd go for the unlimited download package. I'm paying about €100 a month in total for the ISDN, and he pays double that on average as he's always playing that nerdy EverQuest game :)

So €85 a month each for massively faster downloads etc. would be fine by me.

Id like to get were your pulling these random figures from. The only thing ive ever gothen a 30 ping on was a leased line and that was a tad high. 60 ping on isdn is extremely good, and is the best i ever had to an irish server at home was 57ms.

As for adsl, your figures again are way off, 120ms is something id probably get on 56k, maybe closer to 140ms. My ping on adsl is a constant 60 -70 ms to boards.ie. Post a games server and ill test it out

Odd - my pings on ADSL to boards.ie are averaging about 90ms. That said, my pings to games1.iol.ie are around 55ms.

I am in deep conversations with wifey about wheather to get this or not.
i am a bit peed off its €105 a month and with the new PSTN monthly line charge it will be €130 before calls.
granted the advantage of faster connection is the only pro and the cost is a lot of cons.

Could one of the trialist on ADSL ping this server plz
    199.103.180.10:12205
And let me know the average ping.
As its on the East Coast of USA and i ping 220 (999 too) avg with a 56k .
    Thx

€169 for always on 1Meg/256 connection with no cap..... man oh man, that aint so bad at all, really. Considering my normal bill is pretty much around that mark anyway with my newly installed isdn line, I'd be willing to pay that much. If you know how much a current 1 meg leased line costs, its a vast VAST improvement.

isdn pings quite low to irish servers depending on if you have
    a) a very good terminal adaptor or special router
    b) you're using the same isp as the server is on,

lowest i've managed on an irish server with isdn is a 22 ping

    average 35-50

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

    Thx Mount Joy

There is 8 ppl on that server .
Pinging with 32 bytes of data
i got average 223 with a Supramax 56i pro on Eircom Sub 11 hops to server to a Server directly connected to the UUNET(wtf is that ) on a T1 line .

So for 80ms better ping for €105 a month .
Serious considerstion must be taken if people want to get better ping for games .
I would advise everybody to ask the nice people in here with DSL to ping their favourite servers.
That server that Mountjoy Mugger pinged for me is the DaDs Army MOHAA clan we will be using that for other games as we have it rented for the next 3 years with donations ( 50 members and sponsorships)

Maybe Eircom are traffic shaping connections to Boards.ie because of the IrelandOffline forum?

Thats not a 169 euro a bill its a month, which means each bill will be doubled. Dont even think about comparing adsl to leased lines, totaly different leages.

    Hi,

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else see a problem with the release of ADSL? Please, don't get me wrong - I'm delighted that there's actually some movement on the broadband issue.

However, what about those of us who aren't fortunate enough to live within the 3-4km of an exchange? We're still stuck with crappy old 56k connections (if we're VERY lucky! - I don't usually get anything faster than 38600 anymore)

I would have thought that it would have made far more sense for Eircom to go with a flatrate offer initially, get more people connected to the net and then introduce a faster system in the hope of getting more people to move over to it. Surely it's the basic principle of marketing - look at the way almost all supermarkets are laid out - vegetables and bread, etc are the first things people meet on the way in to a supermarket. Why, because those are the things everybody wants. You don't get the dog food and cat food first!

I would have thought that everybody would want flatrate first!

Not all of us want to stay on the net for an indeterminate number of hours downloading MP3's, playing on-line games, etc. I use the net for 1-2 hours a night and every two months I have something like a €140 phone bill and that's purely for net access alone. I couldn't justify ADSL even if I was within range of the exchange, but I COULD justify flatrate.

So, while ADSL is a good move, I think it's putting the cart before the horse. But then, maybe I should know better since it's coming from Eircom!

So, come on Eircom, spare a thought for the rest of us.

    Mike

Are you planning to get a third flatmate to pay the €35 VAT, not to mention the line rental?
