    Besides, it's so damn difficult to book a room due to lack of availabilty, that giving tips just makes life harder.

    I know it seems selfish. (maybe check the yellow pages? shhhh!!)

    I always used Loop, Applerock or the Underground, all of which are in the golden pages. Loop is the priciest but has better equipment and friendly staff - the do recording there too (so they replace their equipment regularly enough). The other two weren't pretty and you get a mix of good and crap equipment though they're more affordable and as long as you don't have too complicated a set up, they'll do the job.

    My best advice though is to find a drummer with a big garage.
