Sorry everyone for spouting a wrong "conspiracy theory" All radio stations appeared at 12.00 p.m. today as scheduled, and as expected, no TV stations. By the way, (to start more talk!!!!) does any one have a theory as to how many weeks/months/years it'll take to get the RTE TV stations onto the NI EPG?

Well I missed the big moment. :( Actually forgot about it till it was too late (12:15)!

    Swoopster,

Agreed get big Ian on the case, tell him to call ask RTE and find out when he can watch TG4. Get him to say that life seems incomplete without 'Leargas' and that he cant live without his weekly GAA fix, they'll be so stunned they'll turn 'em all on immediately.

Seriously tho I do hope you guys up north get these channels. After all like it or not RTE is supposed to be an all Ireland broadcaster. I wouldn't be too hopeful about TV3 tho:( Mebbe a mutual deal can be struck NI viewers get TV3 and ROI gets UTV. Sounds fair to me.

Its six months nearly since ITV went on Sky, and UTV still hav'nt sorted out the rights issue, so I expect it will be some time before you see RTE in NI- there might be a trade off between TV3 and UTV- It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months

I reckon it might not take too long for RTE to launch on satellite in NI.

Assuming that RTE have bought the rights to show their schedules on cable in NI, I guess that it won't take much time to add satellite rights on top of that. My guess would be September 2002 at the latest, but more likely June.

As you know TG4 did not launch today in NI as expected. Expected because TG4 was made available to NI during testing when the other 3 channels were not. SO I guess that RTE possibly decided very late on, not to launch TG4 in NI on its own. They probably thought that it would be better to launch all three channels in NI at the same time.

If you really can't wait for RTE to launch in NI on satellite - check out the signals from the new transmitter at the border in Co Louth. My N2, TV3 and TG4 pics have improved - still snowy, while RTE1 is very, very watchable. The aeriel I use is pointed 45 degrees from the correct line and is only a small aeriel for the local relay (north Belfast). So if I got a proper RTE aeriel the pictures I would receive would be excellent!!!

    According to RTE,
NI viewers will be getting RTE very soon
Thats what they said on the news anyway.

Hi just found out that RTE on the SKY platform are not FTA like BBC and ITV in the UK. You have to subscribe to a family package. I feel as a licence payer this very unfair. But on brighter note SKY are in discussing putting CH4 and UTV on the Irish EPG

fir the NI people, has anyone tried the 'add additional channels' to see if RTE can be got this way ?

There is definitely a dull hum on the sound on network two.
In the "silence gaps" you can hear faintly the sound of RTÉ ONE!
I have checked this on one other box and same story.
Even unplugged analog aerial in both cases to rule out sound feedback to the external A/V.
Not good enough!-for fe*ks sake this is digital!!??

As I understand it, there are some rights issues still being negociated.

They had hoped to have it sorted by launch time, but seemingly its taking a little longer than hoped.

Shouldn't be THAT long though ...

I've also noticed that network2's volume is very low. Its a pain but worth it having all the Irish channels on satellite. Bye-Bye NTL from my house (or as soon as Channel 4 and UTV are up there.

it's a breath of fresh air being able to get TV3 with this kind of picture, in time for the Barcelona - Real Madrid game too :) . the analogue reception is shocking for some reason :(

    Phew!
someone else has noticed a problem with Network two audio.
thats probably what the slight hum I am hearing is??
But why is there a very slight sound of RTÉ ONE breaking in over it?? You can only really hear that if you listen carefully during a silence.
Audio on RTÉ One , TV3 and TG4 is grand- but Network two is crap:(
    It's just not good enough:(

guys thats weird what yeah are saying about network 2.
It must be a digibox problem because i've got chorus. I know i shouldn't compare Chorus to SKY but i feel this is relevant.

On C4 when it goes silent for a second( you know, when the add breaks come and off) i can here itv in the backround and vice versa for itv. its very low but noticeable. Also i here another channel on bbc2 but don't know which

I know for a fact that all these channels are being transmitted from a sky digibox of some sort.

its chourus analogue by the way. In limerick

There must be some faulty make of digiboxes out there or is everyone experiencing the same problem.

All I can say is "God Bless Ye're Ears!!"

I wouldn't think it's a digibox problem as I'v heard it on a panasonic aswell.
I'm not surprised that you are getting sound feedback with chorus analog-They don't care about standards and never have-but I expect better standards on Sky digital.
The sound feedback afaik is not a problem on any other Sky digital channel-It's only Network Two

    Hi all,

I have contacted RTÉ about the sound leaking into Network two from RTÉ 1. They say that due to the increasing costs that they have had to remove alot of the soundproofing from small room that all Network 2 programmes are made. :D

Now that the Irish Channels are on the EPG, is there a potential conflict between the regular ROI subscription card and a "dodgy" FTA card in the same digibox?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

No more than there was before.

When you swap the cards the EPG loads up faster if you are on a channel that is common to both EPGs. It doesn't matter if the channel is scrambled of not. I use UK Gold.

I wonder will the Formula One live coverage
be avaiable on RTE on Sky Digital because
ITV had a problem about showing formula one
because of Sky's F! digital+.But it was sorted out
in the end.But will this also applie to RTE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭carrolls

Correct me if i'm wrong, but if RTE deviates in any way between their terrestial broadcasts and their Digital broadcasts, they will be breaking their agreement with the broadcasting comission.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,931 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

May well be the case. You should be able to inspect a copy of the contract at the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland's offices, to be sure though.

Who gets the better deal ROI or NI???
    ;)
I hear this argument trotted out again and again and although I have sympathy with it as I live in the Republic, I think that we in the ROI get a better deal for our money. We don't pay the UK licence fee, we pay the Irish Licence fee which is much cheaper. The otehr UK channels are not part of the Sky Subscription either. Film Four and many of the other packs are cheaper in ROI too.

So whilst I do think it would be nice to get all the UK channels, we are not being disenfranchised by not getting them.

It does look like GB viewers will be disenfranchised though when RTE lauches in NI.

    Well
WAS F1 on RTE Digital today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭carrolls

Yes it was available, in all its digital glory.
Kinda undermines Sky's Formula One PPV package in the Republic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 269 ✭✭jez

I don't think it undermines Skys ppv coverage. Sky's is an interactive service for the specialist enthusiasts. For years now we have watched the routine F1 coverage on BBC,ITV,RTE and even Eurosport( that wonderful channel that you must be able to pick up with a coat hanger and is always available in your cheap holiday apt in Spain!).Therefore the fact F1 is on digital here is no big deal. The really BIG deal is that GAA matches are being blocked in Ireland. That makes no sense. They are basically accusing Sky Digital subscribers here and in England of being devious, cute devils out to beat the system!Never....

does anybody have text on the irish stations. I cannot get it and just wondered if i should ring sky (and hang on for half an hour)

Analog teletext is available on all channels;ie Aertel, etc
It's accessable in the normal way.
I presume you are referring to digital teletext??
You'll be waiting more than a half hour for that.
    There is none.

    Try rebooting your digibox.

Analogue text has nothing to do with the digibox really.

As long as the TV station is coming through to the the TV, it's the TV itself that displays the analogue teletext.

Remember to press "TV" before pressing text on the Sky remote, or alternately just press "text on your normal TV remote.

    Good luck with it.

It does. I have lost teletext numerous times, and a digibox reboot sorts out the problem.

The important word was Analogue. Analogue text is carried as part of the transmitted picture. If you have a picture you will get analogue text (if it is provided by the channel). Digital text on the other hand is totally different. In Sky's case it is on a different transponder. On ITV-Digital the ITV Digital Text was on a different channel to ITV. I think the same is true for BBCi.

That's the point that I was trying to make.

But I did say "analogue" twice.

The analogue text is carried in the extra lines that are transmitted. So as Shane so rightly points out - if you have a picture you will get analogue text (if it is provided by the channel, Teletext for example is not carried on ITV's or Channel 4's services on Sky Digital due to contractual reasons - it's stopeed at source.).

Digital text (ie Sky's or the Beeb's enhanced texts) is transmitted seperately from the actual pictures themselves.

has Aertel ALWAYS been this slow, or was it quicker before it went onto Sky Digital? (innocent question from your favourite Ulsterman!!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭carrolls

It is exactly the same speed.
RTE Downloads its Teletext information 1440 bytes per frame
and there are 50 frames a second.
RTE broadcasts 50 frames per second on both analogue and digital.

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭mocar

so there is text on rte on digital. just ordinary text press tv then text. that is what i am doing but no text just page 100 but no writing. do i have to reboot my digibox? is that where you switch it off then switch it on with the backup button pressed?

    thanks lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Can you get teletext on RTÉ1 in the conventional way?

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭mocar

i can get it (text that is ) when i view rte through my aerial but not through the digibox (sky)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭dmeehan

mocar, i had the same problem

just pull out the plug from your digibox, leave it for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
select channel 101, press tv, press text
    hello aertel

this worked fine for me a number of times, and my tv never had text until i got the sky remote with the text button
