Empire Earth

I recently started playing Empire Earth but i do not have the idiot's guide to the game, and the common <ctrl>+<number> combination to setting a group doesn't seem to work. I was just wondering if there was a way to do this as it is really annoying not being able to do so.?

You should buy the game next time instead of copying it. You get a manual with it. I have no sympathy.
