I have already contacted linux.ie and got full details on creating a new Irish South Linux User's Group. I am looking for anyone willing to join the commitee who are willing to take time out to setup events for South Linux Users.

I am currently personally working on the official website, any personally wrote docs in relation to Linux are most welcome. Whether you are relatively new to linux, wanting to know more about this great operating system or want to put your advanced knowledge to use, feel free to contact me @ penfold@slackroot.com.

So people you have heard it here first there is going to be a
South East LUG, it will primarily be for people from Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny and Carlow (maybe wicklow :P).

We hope to organise pissups etc and of course maybe some Unix talks by persons in the know :).

    Much more to follow *hopefully*

    Regards,

    Paul (your unix moderator)

Yup, Flamegrill has just spelled it out in black and white for you right there, we have already briefly gone through the idea and i have high hopes for the team.

The more members the more fun, maybe we can even hack together our own modifyed kernel :P. Anyways i am going to put forward a small meeting first for anyone wishing to join the commitee so plans and events can be discussed, after that goes well i can contact Ken at linux.ie again and forward our new plans to him.

So i will leave you with that thought, good night, good luck and good for me cos i get to sleep in tomorrow :)

Actually a few people use Linux around here. There was an install fest a few years ago but apparently it was over when I woke up. It was during daylight hours. :)

The TSSG guys out in the college may also be interested in this.

    Regards...jmcc

    Evening..
Please excuse my belated response to the SLUG meetings. i've been currently over in the States and i'm returning on the 13th of this month.

Due to my connection to a T1 line and an infinity of bandwidth i have burned copies of slackware, freebsd and openbsd. I'll try to get some more burned before i come home so i can get some users setup.

I'm still full on to get these SLUG meetings going, i was pretty busy working on a content management system the last few months in PHP along with a Networking course so i had little or no time to work something out, now on my return i will have forever time to kick this off and get it running.

Those not impressed by any unix distro or varient should always give it a shot. It is not an operating system for those who wish to quickly get on the net and get freaky deaky with net porn, it would though be a wise operating system of choice for those who like to program, those who like to customise there own working enviroment and those who wish to have the freedom to modify and redistribute an operating system. There is so much power and most varients are free...

Anyways anybody can feel free to hit me up with a mail anytime and i'll get something sorted pretty soon..

To further on the post, to show i'm willing to put in the effort to get this running, i'll setup a dynamically controlled website that i scripted in php for the group to make sure everything is official, we can have a meetings section, beer images (kodak moments of nixers after one too many) and other various rambling.

Ok, well i doubt many people will gain an interest until i put up a site and show that i want to put some work in. So i'll stick up a site within the next few days.

    The url is:
    http://penfold.secure-industries.com/slug/

If anybody wants to mail me in the meantime and throw ideas, then feel free to mail me @ john.penfold@ziplip.com. If you prefer to use PGP then feel free to obtain my public PGP key and import.

    hi,
I was for a long time trying to get a group in kilkenny active in linux but i
found that a limited amount of people are interested.
So yes i am interested in getting LUG going.
Did you set up a slug mailing list with linux.ie yet?

Id be intrested in getting involved, iv been admining the WIT Comp Soc machines for the last few years so those resources can be put behind it as well.

I can VHost the domian, mail and mailing lists as well if you need it. Im also a former employee of TSSG so ill mention it to a few of the lads who might be intrested.

I can pull down and burn ISO's on request and i have a copy of SuSE 8.2.

well I've got a copy of debian......

Ok things should start to get rolling pretty soon. I should of having the site up along time ago, but i have been working on a kernel for a new operating system me and a few collegues are working on.

Tonight i'm going to e-mail linux.ie to get something finalised, aswell as get the site up. I also want to get a first meeting setup, so anybody interested in a meeting within the next two weeks (starting today: 10th of may), then e-mail me @ john.penfold@ziplip.com .

Please put SLUG in the email header/topic. I've been bombarded with spam as of late and i am working on reducing it, but for now, your SLUG title will let me know that your e-mail is not spam. Also if you wish to use your pgpkey it can be found here

If we can even get three people to meet up for the first meeting, i am sure we can work from there. All we need is proof of a positive run..

Well i have alot of work to do, so i'll check up later on on my mail and i'll post an update on received mails/website ect...

Well unfortunately, my friend never set me up that mysql account, but fortunately, i have friends (as in plural) so i got hosting from another friend. The site can be found here.

I am also waiting on a response from linux.ie for an official go ahead for the project along with a slug.linux.ie vhost. When i hear anything, i'll let you all know.

The site is setup, all we need now is 3 or 4 of us to meet up for a meeting so we can get the ball roilling. I am really enthusiastic to get this running, so anybody who thinks that they can make it down to waterford within the next 2/3 weeks, then please do mail me.. I'll give a free copy of Slackware to anybody who wishes to come. Now what more can a guy do?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32 oslin

Well as long as it is during the day,I can come
I can even bring the full 8.2 ftp edition of suse if anyone is interested. 4 CD's.
the only small problem is that i cannot get it to install yet some small thing needs to be fixed.
How about next week some time as most people are finished college and have loads of free time (like me) The faster we get to meet the faster we can establish a good lug.
    The only problem is where?
    nils
If anyone as a personal preference for a distro i am sure i can download it.
What about a logo. for the site.
a few friends off mine are animators/artists
    www.cartoonsalooon.ie
i could ask them it sketch a few ideas.?
