You all have probably seen the stuff around town inviting you to the reclaim the streets party on monday the 6th of may.

what is this?? i know by the title of this post you probably thought i was going to say something about ti, but i.m not as i dont have a clue what it is. is it going to be a mad riot or what? whats the politics of it? - socialists, anarchist, hatred of fine geal, anti-capitalist,punk revival WHAT??? who is organising it?

i'm going no matter what it is cause its a bank holiday and the best cure for a hangover is a good beating from riot police.

Reclaim the Streets - i like the sound of that.:D

As far as I know Anarchy Ireland are organising it- the people that were organising buy nothing day..god bless them and their glueing of shop doors shut..unfortunately I still had to go to work but it was funny nonetheless...some very pissed off people on Henry Street!! Hopefully its a peaceful party type thing though..

this is what happens when u educate lazy middle class. Go out a get jobs ya hippies.

Globalization, huh with-out it we wouldnt have any of the bare neccessaties which we have in our homes today, plus u wouldn't be looking on the internet right now, or even have a computer.

"Much to do about nothing" = Globalisation protesters.

I had a fun time watching some of the anti-globalization May Day rallies in London on the news yesterday. I think I saw three different lads wearing "Nike" sweatshirts in one broadcast!

i was told by some wholely unrelyable sources that it was some sort of dance music street rave party type thingy.

oh yeah, ste k (if that is your real name) itis common knowledge that you'll be going to this thing.it is also known that you are the embodyment of lazy middle class. everyone sees anti - capatalists as extreme-ists or losers who like to give out about stuff, well hows this - when i see you on monday, you can be sure its me cause i'll be the one ramming the big red flag up your hole!

    ferdi

if you want to take this further, talk to me tomorrow.

it's just as much of an oxymoron as this one:
    Anarchy Ireland are organising it

Don't judge it until you understand it. I'm no anarchist and most people who will be attenting won't fit into any neat category - I'm just someone who hates what's going on around me, as much as I'm responsible for it, and want to continue asking questions and exploring alternatives. I'm not aligned with any group of any description.

What I can say quite safely, is that Reclaim the Streets is just one way in which people attempt to present an alternative via experiencing it, not reading it in books. By ridding an over-built urban space of traffic and headless chicken consumerism for even one hour changes the nature of urban space. It created the space for people to question what exactly the urban environment is all about - is it about people living together or is it about commerce? What's commerce? How does it affect people? How does it affect me? How much does the air smell cleaner? It requires an open mind when engaging in the action but having an open mind is what the 'movement' should always be about. It's not about harming people or businesses but it is about being belligerent - but just for a while.

Other kinds of 'experiential' forms of protest, 'kind' forms of protest even, are Critical Mass (pushing for more bike lanes in cities) to Buy Nothing Day - just imagine trying to buy nothing for a day. What questions would you ask yourself then? This is what it's all about at the moment - asking questions and experiencing alternatives.

And by the way, Critical Mass takes place every month, Reclaim The Streets has been going on here for at least three years.

Anyway, here are a few links:

no,no,no,no,no,no! NOT judging it in any way- i just thought it was funny that it was being organised by an anarchist group- i always thought that anarchy was the antithesis of organisation!

there must be admitted irony in the anit-globalization protests by globally organised anarchists

There was already a buy nothing day this year, either organise your own - pick a day and do it, there's no time like the present - or wait till next year.
