What is this business with Cool Newbie and Quick Newbie and all that? Yes, I know it counts up from the number of posts but the adjectives are a bit adolescent in a nerdish kind of way. Any number of other hierarchies could be applied....

I was going to look at a few other hierarchies (none of them Catholic), but did think that the Star Trek hierarchy would be a candidate. Shall we try to collect some more?

If it's not too much trouble...

We used to have just 4 categories (Captain = Admin, Commander = Mod, and then Lieutenant and Ensign). The Star Trek / military ranks are still good...

We can always add or remove levels (they number of posts required can be changed / deleted if necessary).

I have to agree, the current rank/titles aren't exactly flattering
The StarTrek ranks were good, (RedShirt, Borg etc).

Although I'd imagine most people would find it distasteful

Whatever it is, make it something that everyone will 'get', I'd say a lot of boards users would be confused by smak's bosco titles :P

I understand that the Irish Military and the Irish Civil Service have equivalent ranks (a Sargeant Major equals an Assistant Principal or something like that). Would that be too weird?

i likes the titles the way they are really. maybe just change cool and fast newbie to something else. other than that they are fine.

...the current ones have no recognisable continuity to them - at least most people are familiar with pseudo-military ranking schemes, but there's no inherently obvious order or precedence for at least some of the current titles, for example:

Freak
Insane Poster

...or am I the only one missing something very obvious?

It'll be interesting to see if the stars get replaced by comm badges... :rolleyes:

It's something we've been debating over for a while [I've merged two thread together to form this one]... After many possibilities ranging from Bosco titles (smak) to religious (not well favoured) the Trek ones seemed most popular.

Here's the orders:

Admiral (Administrator)

Vice-Admiral (Super Moderator)

Captain (Moderator)

Commander (Community Moderator)

Lieutenant-Commander (1000)

Lieutenant (500)

Lieutenant-Junior Grade (250)

Ensign (100)

Cadet 4th Year (50)

Cadet 3rd Year (25)

Cadet 2nd Year (10)

Cadet 1st Year (0)


It's pretty much the same levels as before except I've removed the 5 posts level and added 10 and 25 (old titles are somewhere at the top of this thread).

I'm not a fan of Star Trek, but the titles are not that bad. There is more of them, which is good, and I think that over time, the blue/white/gold star issue will sort itself out.

But I can see the argument that its too nerdy and geeky. Some of us dont want to be reminded of that fact!!

Yep I thought there might be some issues with Community Moderators getting bumped up to Commander with only 10 posts say, so that's why I think a change in rules may be necessary to say that community forums will only be given when requested by at least 1 lieutenant-junior grade and 4 ensigns
