Upgrading laptop BIOS without Battery?

Trying to update the BIOS on my IBM 600E lappy (so I can upgrade from W98 -> Win2k), but the battery is dead. The BIOS update program won't let me attempt to update without both the battery and the AC power. Anyway to get around the need for the battery? Ta..
