That's up to Eircom, ain't it?

Translates to between forty and sixty quid. Knowing Eircom, there'll be hidden charges too.

Gives more details in todays Irish Times.

While a price has not yet been agreed, it is believed it will fall withing a range of £40-£60 a month.

Other telecoms have complained they cannot consider offering a DSL service until Eircom completes the process of unbundling the local loop - opening to competition that part of its netork between local exchanges and individual buildings. Recently, the ODTR, required Eircom to lower the price charged for each local loop by a third to 13.53 Euro.

Eircom is required to inform other telecoms operators of its DSL plans and pricing structures before offering its own services, and is understood to be at an advanced stage of that process. Once Eircom fixes a price, at least one other operator is expected to put forward a DSL service.

Although Worldwide the take up of DSl has been lower than expected and most smaller operators in those markets have ceased to offer DSL.

The skeptic in me says "yeah yeah... September of what year???"... the optimist in me says "woohoo!"

Let's hope optimism is more justified come September (2001 wink.gif)

Whoop, flate rate ADSL Access, I'd pay anywhere up to 150 a month for that kind of access. conn'ed 24/7, set up your own ftp and websites and everything, sounds like fun to me.

    God above,

to think that on the Chorus thread there was a debate about whether or not a 3 gig limit was sufficient? I would imagine that 1 gig a month would easily be achievable, even with just general use. Thats just 30mb+/- per day. A few hrs of Q3 would nearly rack that up, nevermind when peeps actually d/l stuff.

I would not get too excited, since they can stop you setting up your own servers, they will have something to say that you are not allowed to set up servers yadda yadda. Still I will if I can, but it will be years until DSL will be in my area knowing my luck.

1 gig limited, rofl .... you'd easily do 5gigs a day on a decent ADSL connection. Hell i've done a gig in 1 day even on ISDN. Anyone got an idea of its speed yet, 256k or 512.

M1ke it depends on ur distance to the exchange, but 512k would be standard.

Well there will probably be no broadband competition in many areas against them,so substitute the word 'greedy' for the word 'dumb'.

It will only be 64k upstream.

But that's not very helpful to us now, is it?

    Hello all.
I have been following this topic with a lot of interest and execitement with the thought of affordable fast internet connection. So when today I got a visit from an eircom sale’s rep, about my change from eircom to NTL due to NTL’s Free at weekend service, I though this was a good opportunity to ask about the “rolling out” of the DSL service in September.
He told me that he himself had heard nothing of the DSL service, put after mentioning my interest in returning to eircom if this service was coming available, he decided to make a call to his boss.
To which I got the following information.
Yes the DSL service is coming available in September,
Put only to the corporate market,
And they have no plans to make it available to the household consumer.

As I said this came from a sales rep from eircom so take from that what you may.

    Brian.

    B A S T E R D S

cheating pack of swiney greedy no-look-to-the-future exploitative ignorant still-back-in-1969-Ireland shower of no good corporate mugs.

The Irish government was extemely foolish to let Eircom float public. They should have held onto the Loacal-loop and all teh physical infrastrucure and sold Eircoma s a carrier. Then we wouldn't have any o this boll0xing on. But BVertie would probably blow allt he cash on another stupid idea like taht stadium of his.
