    I have a pdc dhcp server,which is ras and wins server too.
    Nt4server servicepack 6a.
    When it is busy, processor utilization spiking to 100% sometimes, it will not resolve Wins queries for the ras'ed in clients. Usually only 1 in 1000 or more queries are successful.

    Any ideas, has this happened to you?

    ramp up the memory

    1/2 gig of memory in there, and the memory usage is consistantly below 60%

    Have you got one or two WINS servers? When this occurs can the users on your network still resolve Netbois names?

    Check the event log and see if there are any errors

    BTW, what's the spec of the machine and what's it used for?

    Thanks for the replies.
    The servers a dual processor 500 mhz
    100 mhz fsb
    5x 13gig scsi hdds (hotswappable
    512mb ram
    is a ras server for its own vlan, whicjh can only be RAS'ed into. (no local clients) it is set up as Dhcp, +Wins
    Running NTserver4 Sevice pack 6a

    In particular we seem to have proble with W95 clients rassing in and getting wins resolution.

    Any more idea's

    Have you looked at which processes are using the CPU time when the load is 100%?

    How many users are connected when the CPU is 100%?

    On thw wins client, set the secondary wins server to the address of the primary as well.

    Straight from ntfaq.com

    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
    known problem exists when a secondary WINS is not defined as the algorithm is as follows

    When booting up, register your name with your primary WINS server. Or when performing a normal name query, first send the request to your primary WINS server.
    If the primary WINS server does not respond after 3 attempts, send your registration or query to the secondary WINS server listed.
    If the secondary WINS server does not respond after 3 attempts, send the query again to the primary WINS server, and continue alternating between primary and secondary WINS server until one of them responds.
    The problem results if there is no secondary WINS server listed. The client may revert to B-Node (broadcast only) behavior and stops querying the WINS server completely.

    To fix this make sure you have a secondary WINS server defined. If you only have one WINS server, list it in both the primary and secondary boxes.

    Clients can be updated by starting the Network control panel applet, select the Protocols tab, select TCP/IP, select the WINS tab and fill in the boxes. If the clients use DHCP ensure the scope if configured with both primary and secondary.
    </font>

    hope this helps

    I havent checked the processes, because they have to run anyway.
    (SQL server) is running and pulling frm a unix box.
    Thats the killer for the cpu time.
    But my problem is if a ras user logs on he does not get wins resolution.
    I cant short term do anything about the high use of cpu, (at certain times only.)
    But 95 client dials in and cant get resolution, a 98 client at about the same time can.
    in both these instances, they were the only user dialled in, and processor util as averaging 45%
