no they havent, this was settled awhile back, microsoft backed down, and agreed to provide decent mp3 software

Gladiator, MS were going to have their own mp3 support built into winXP. They have recently dropped this support, but they will still recommend 3rd party mp3 players / rippers etc.

so what you saying is instead of porviding the crap software they are now going to provide none, i heard they were going to provided better mp3 software instead.
we will see what happens when xp hits.

doesnt matter anyway, everybody uses a third party mp3 player like winamp

I think the crux of this is that MS want to get their version of MP3 to take over and by not providing MP3 with winxp it makes it easier for their platform to take over. Similar to the whole Netscape vs IE controversy..

no that wasnt their only plain, it was to provide crap mp3 software so people would use mpeg, ms own format,

I presume so to, since mpeg is video compressioness

These tactics haven't always worked for Microsoft. MSN never took off even though it practically connected itself if you bought Windows 95. The early version of IE was pretty poor with Win95 but people were still more interested in the Internet than MSN. Real Media is still very popular despite windows media being pre-installed on Windows.

The MP3 format is pretty standard even though it has it's limitations. I think Microsoft will have a hard time replacing it.

mpeg is a compression standard, not just limited to video, mp3 is based on it sure.

No matter what they do Microsoft will do what gives them the most control over the medium (or damagees it if they can't do that).

The current status of MP3 playback in XP, as explained to me by a guy working on the XP media player project, is that the internal MP3 codecs in XP will be fundamentally broken, and will never output full quality audio streams. Basically they're making MP3 playback lower quality than WMA in order to convince people to use the (SDMI compliant) WMA system.

Winamp of course will still work, and uses its own codec so playback will be full quality. However, people playing DivX movies which use MP3 for their audio stream will have really poor quality audio playback.

Third-party rippers may or may not work; they'll certainly find it tough as the ASPI layer, among other things, is now locked out to prevent third-party CD burning software from working.

    XP lives in the bin...

Beta ver of XP has low quality mp3 codec for testing. codec will be droped from the shipping version.

played the song in both Winamp and WMP and there is no noticable difference between them and my DAP player(ie)quality.
