Poll edited to add some glaring omissions.

Sorry, no Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, 3DO or CD-i, because I can only fit 10 things in a poll... And anyone voting for 'em needs their head examined anyway :)

    [edit]
Oh, and I voted for the Playstation, simply because of the number of astounding gaming experiences it delivered. I also loved the SNES, the Dreamcast and the N64 provided the best ratio of superb games to poor games of any systems, ever, and the PS2 and Gamecube are both on their way to being fine consoles. The PSone is still the daddy though.

i dont know about the others but the arari 2600 was very good for its time :)

The SNES was the ruler for a while...some people seem to believe that the MegaDrive beat the SNES when they were out...bulls-h-i-t...the MegaDrive was an amazing system, I always believed that the Streets of Rage and Sonic games were perhaps the finest examples of quality gaming, with all the hallmarks of good games...fun, enjoyment, interesting..they had it all.

But the SNES was more powerful and it did outperform the MegaDrive...the MegaDrive's main strength was it's speed to generate graphics...but this was at the expense of detalied graphics.

The SNES really picked up, considering the MegaDrive was released a good bit before the SNES...the SNES had original games, and good games...the trademark Nintendo is known for.

I'd also agree with Dr.Seagull, the Atari 2600 was a great system for its time, pity though the time it came out in, regarding the video game crash of '84.

C'mon on Shinj, need head examined for liking the Atari??
Without their innovation, we probably wouldn't have accepted video games the way they're accepted today...and the 3DO and CD-I, weren't they those systems that were "all in one fully multimedia experiences, stereo sound"?

What a time for video games, the early 90's.

    What Par said.

The SNES may have claimed #1 if I had of been an ickle bit older - missed so many classics that I'm still only discovering due to my ignorance :)

The senes was much better than the megadrive all round with games like rock and roll racing, mariokart, f zero and the street fighter family.

But the megadrive had amazing games too like robocop vs. terminator, the streets of rage trilogy and sonics.

Pure gaming at it's best before graphics were everything, I'd love to see them re released but I'm happy to still ahve my snes.

The SNES is still holds strongest in my gaming memories but the gamecube is catching up quick by the look of things, playstation very close behind.

My greatest memories were playing super mario World, Super Star Wars, F-Zero, Starfox (when released that game seemed light years ahead for its time) and super mario kart. The SNES was far superior to anything else out at the time (megadrive, Amiga, PC) but 1992 came along and Doom was born on the Pc and from that day forth the PC carried the best looking games if ya had the right equipment.

For me it looks like the Gamecube is the Snes for this generation, im in love with my gamecube already and i only have 2 games for it.

    I do!

Then again, I'm not a console person.

PC owns all, plain and simple.

the Playstation is my favourite but seeing as the Playstation 2 can also run Playstation 1 games i've given that my vote

I went for Snes as it brought me pure joy with the quality of games.
And as its a Console poll i think everyone is missing an important part of what makes a console great the Joystick or Pad.
So the Snes with its games and pad was my favourite.
N64 next and then PS but the PS problem was its the C64 of its generation 100`s of games and most were ****e.
Havent got a GC or Xbox or PS2 so cant comment on them.

The n64 didn't have that many good games cept golden eye, mario kart and a couple of others. The joypad could be quite awkward to use at times

Pld DBC. It ****ing pisses me off when people say some crap like "the N64 only had like three good games" when they've probably never even owned the console.

SNES was the absolute father. I don't care whether the MD was more popular (if anyone wants to argue that I somehow don't know what I'm talking about, I'll remind them that I own all but 3 of the consoles listed, a number that will gradually decrease over the coming weeks)

I voted for the Snes. So many years of joy from that 'ickle grey box . Bomberman....Street Figther,...Mario Kart, oh! The memories..*sniff*

I might have voted otherwise if I was lucky enough to haved owned a Playstation or Dreamcast earlier. It's only now I'm actually getting into them.

Zelda 5 and 6 actually. And I personally would have left them out of that list as well tbh.

Actually, what the christ is Turok 2 doing in that list??

I personally have to go for the snes, genesis generation - that was the time I really liked consoles but over the last 7 years I sold my sole for the PC.

I have a NES, Gameboy, Master System, Megadrive, C64, PSX, N64, DC, PS2 and a killer PC (Plus 6 other PC's). (I am getting a SNES at the weekend would you believe and maybe a gamecube too)

I have had more. It's hard to pick one. It depends.

The NES had games which were addictive like crack. Super Mario 3 remains one of the most playable games of all time.

The master system helped introduce arcade classics like hang on and space harrier into the living room.

The C64 paved the way for the current pc scene. Hardware add-ons, public domain software, thousands of games plus the opportunity to program your own. It spent enough years on top to be considered the king. And no the spectrum wasn't better, you are deluding yourself if you think so, although it did have it's own attractions.

Megadrive, was the major jump. Master System had brought arcade like graphics to the living room, Megadrive (initially at least, could match the arcade), street fighter, streets of rage, sonic etc..... yet again the bar was raised. I personally loved the megadrive. It also had depth (Phantasy Star etc...)

SNES, wasn't too taken with this at first, but with the Donkey
Kong Country series, it stomped it's technical superiority all over the Megadrive. But it was never about technical superiority, it was about the games, and I think in this respect the 2 were well matched. Nintendo were getting ahead a bit at the end though (when it didn't matter so much). In Starfox it also introducced the first (pseduo) good 3d home console game.

PSX - The biggest thing to ever happen to video games. Brought our hobby into the mainstream, no longer had you to slink into the local games shop like a commando hoping the local teenage girls didn't spot you and brand you a nerd. Ridge Racer, Wipeout Tekken, the holy trinity which started it. Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, MGS, FF7, ISS, FIFA98, Gran Tourismo. Watersheds in video gaming. The PSX has moulded how so many genres of games look today. In terms of influence it has been more influential than it's successor because the PS2 just does the same as the PS1 only prettier. This may change in time to come.

Saturn - Technically not as good, but had it's moments (nights etc...) never given a chance, which is a shame as a company like Sega is good for the industry.

N64 - 2 years to late to challenge. However also hugley influential, Mario 64, set the bar even higher for the platform genre, graphics were better than PSX (Fuzzy and over AA'd but more effective in many cases, I felt). Zelda, possibly remains the greatest game of all time on any format, it's certainley a contender. Half the FPS's today still rip off Goldeneye. You couldn't write the N64 off. I have to say that at least 3 of my favourite games between all the machines, I own or have owned, including arein my all time top 10. Any I doubt I'm the only one.

DC - A shame this one died. I have one with 40 games. Quake 3 online played perfect with no lag. I loved it. Great arcade machine

PS2 - Derivative of PS1. Too early still to say, little innovation (except for GTA3), an outstanding machine and despite the hype not going to be defeated this time. Plus best soccer game ever by a long way (Pro Evolution).

Gamecube, I suspect will beat XBOX on original games. Mostly sequels right now, but thats to be expected at the start when companies hack out hastily converted versions of their old games to capitalise on the lower choice on offer to early punters.
Rogue Leader and SUper Monkey ball are outstanding.

XBOX, no doubt I will buy one anyway, but this appeals to me less. I have a beast of a gaming PC at home which will no doubt play the same titles. I am still not writing the XBOX off though. Who knows what tricks bill has up his sleeve.

PC - My favourite I suppose for it's diversity. No character like the others, but makes games a communal thing and in that respect, the PC has shown what the future is for gaming. Eventually it will all be about multiplayer games. Now if only we could get the infrastructure in play in our backward little cabbage patch.

Information Superhighway hub of Europe, call centre specialists Mrs Harney ? You're having a laugh, easy to say, but we're not fooled.

Ah yes DeadBankClerk, the (c) Turok 2 cerebral bore, perhaps the most satisfying weapon ever in a multiplayer game.
