I supported Fine Gael this time around, although I'm not really impressed by Noonan as a leader. It would be interesting to see how many either did not vote or voted for someone completely off the wall (sic) to register a protest vote. In my own constituency there were 14 candidates, and I honestly felt a few of them just put their names down as a bit of a joke.

Ah well, I'm just biding my time until I establish my own form of totalitarian dictatorship and then you will ALL BE MY SLAVES.

i did not vote for a number of reasons. firstly is the utter resentment politicians have for young voters. the scheduling of recent referendum/i (what is the plural of referendum?) is testament to this. secondly there is what i like to call the noonan effect. politicians always lie to get into power but when noonan offered money to eircom shareholders that really pushed my cynicisim over the edge. this is a man who will (metaphorically)stand on street corners like a cheap hooker and offer to suck you off if he thinks it will get him votes. then there is bertie. If you got to where you are thanks to Haughey your hands are not clean. there is probably a very large amount of scandle that has been buried by bertie and his cronies. the PDs, parasites is the only way to describe these people. willing to saddle up with satan if needs be to get thier grubby mits into power. the fact that the government have basically give the people the 2 fingers after the nice referendum by saying it will be put forward again truly disguists me. so the sleaze and arrogance of those nice folk who sit in the dail(hell most of them dont even turn up the majority of the time) has turned me off the electoral system.

maybe giving all candidates a gun and the last one standing is the winner might work. at least those who compete would have the courage of their convictions to run if they knew they might die :)

Same here, although I stuck Labour between the two FG candidates. In all cases, I voted for the TD's and to a degree the parties, not the leaders. Noonan has a lot to learn, and I'm not sure he's going to last long enough to learn it. I'm pretty confident he won't last long as leader after the election (barring an unlikely surprise).

what is the plural of referendum

You can use 'referendums', but 'referenda' is the common usage.

OED recommends "referendums, not referenda". Good enough for me.

This was my first time voting in a general election so im just wondering how do you go about spoiling your vote? I used the electronic voting system though so is it impossible now?

One thing that would have put me off voting for Fine Gael. It did put my father off voting for them - he voted Labour instead. I'm not a traditional supporter of anyone - in the end I concluded that voting for Fine Gael (even with the handouts they were intending to give to every disaffected group) would be cheaper than having FF in power

    Agreed here.

Also agreed. Not on the parasites bit, but they would, it seems, do anything to get into power.

In the old days (paper votes) you would achieve this by writing "Mr Applepie OWNZ you all, scumbags" on your paper. With the electronic voting system there is no facility to voice your discomfort at voting for anyone.
