Built new P4 macine with new C drive, before taking old machine to bits transferred all my documents, downloads and drivers to d drive. this was then transfered to the new machine as slave to c. New machine loaded with XP Pro (Same as old Machine) but bios sees both drives but drive d does not appear on xp my computer. but it is present in hardware manager and in disk management but not assigned any drive letter and is shaded!......

    Any ideas...

Boot off a boot disk and make sure you can access it in dos (assuming its not NTFS that is). If you can then you have some weird MS problem.. otherwise it will be some jumper setting probably.. yes even though they are both seen in the bios!

Probably just an XP prob though.. dont know what it could be... Unless you have another drive specified to the driver letter it should be taking.. like cdrom assigned d: so hdd has no where to go?

Set up both drives as masters, use the new drive as the primary master on IDE0 cable and use the old drive as secondary master on the IDE1 cable(the one you normally use for the cd drive.

Note: No other drives should be installed.

See if windows picks up the drive now(which it should), if everything is ok attempt to set up the master/slave config which you tried before. Pay attention to the jumper setting on the new drive as it may be set up as single drive(jumpered horizontacally and vertically)

To do this correctly note the drives jumper settings printed on drive itself.

Hope any of this helps and best of luck...

In older MS OSs there was an option to hide drives in my computer. Its buried in the registry somewhere. If you have access to poledit you should be able to check this setting.

If you can see the drive from the DOS prompt(if XP has one) this is probably your problem.

BTBB good point.. could be a fecked registry... dont mind that poledit crap though.. install tweakui... just tick the box for the drive if its unticked!

If its status is set to Healthy, Right click on it and goto Import (in Disk Manager)
