A colleague of mine is about to get NTL/digital
installed including cable modem for internet
access. He has a few questions which he asked
me to pose on the Ireland offline board.

Firstly will he get a fixed IP address,
does the box use DHCP ? What is the typical
installation procedure - does the cable guy
bring a laptop to verify the internet
connectivity or need access typically to the
    customers computer/PC,etc to complete the
installation? What is the quality of service
like in terms of bandwidth. I know cable modems
in the US have the reputation of having issues
regards to shared media and degradation in
    the evenings,etc.

In general you are not permitted to operate servers on a cable service so you are not given a static IP. In general the more users the worse the quality of service but as the uptake so far has been so low I have a feeling that this will not be a problem for at least a few years.

I live in Woodstown & we were meant to get it free for the 1st month but the stupid NTL ppl never came. it's then 30 euros a month after that which is broadband. apprantely its cheaper if u get digital tv too but no hope of that for a while.
