Microsoft, responding to controversy created around plans to include support for ripping MP3 files--but only at meager 56Kbit rates--has decided to drop standard support for MP3 ripping from Windows Media Player 8.0, which is included in Windows XP. Microsoft will offer full MP3 ripping and DVD decoding support in a separate software pack that will retail for around US$30. The reason for the pricing is a $2.50 fee charged to Microsoft by Thomson Multimedia for including MP3 support. In addition, Microsoft would pay a fee for DVD decoding, but the amount of the DVD-fee was not disclosed.
