We've heard in recent posts the best rock song(s) ever, worst album(s) ever - and even the biggest sellouts....

So what is the best rock album ever?

Appetite For Destruction - Guns N' Roses

    Hands down

I was gona start things off with saying S+M by Metallica, but as I have found out there are alot of anit-metallica people around these parts. I think if some of those guys, AWHORE etc. would look past the "sellout" part of bands, and look more towards the music, you might see something special - anywho, G'n'R, good choice.

    Oh, shut up!

Metallica have made some FANTASTIC albums.
Definetly worthy of best album ever status!
Even the recent S&M was brilliant.

I was a huge Metallica fan.
But that doesn't mean that they haven't sold out.

i think this should be split up into best per decade, i mean how can you compare Ten to something like Neil Youngs Harvest? :)

    60s.. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I
70s.. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here or the above mentioned neil young - harvest or Lynyrd skynyrd - Pronounced... all bloody great in their own rock sub-genres :)
80s.. my bloody valentine - isn't anything OR stone roses - stone roses.
90s.. pearl jam - ten/Vs. or sebadoh - bakesale or jeff buckley - grace or something..
00s.. nothings caught my eye rock wise yet as a future classic, maybe S&M I guess, although I don't rate it at all personally..

just couldn't possibly pick one.. too many.. too many...

I know Metallica have some of the VERY best albums, I am a huge fan. I just think you take music on a different level, I mean dont worry about bands selling out - just listen to them...

    Eron...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I *DO* still listen to Metallica.
And nothing's going to change that, but it's just clear to me that they've sold out.

    And of course it matters.
    Look at Cradle Of Filth.

I'm a huge fan of theirs, but with their last album, they have most blatantly sold out.
And it's a completely crap album, filled with dumbassed songs to appeal to the nu-metal kids.

So saying "Don't worry about the bands selling out - Just listen to them" just doesn't work when they come out and release some pile of crap.

dont listen in that case :>

    Slayer - Reign in Blood.

    Plain and simple.

70's : Night At The Opera / Let There Be Rock.
80's : Appetite For Destruction / Permanent Vacation / Blizzard Of Ozz
90's : Grace / Dusk And Her Embrace / World Coming Down / Zooropa
    00's : Beautiful Creatures / Ain't Life Grand.

... 00's may not be lasting classics though. Work out the bands yourself...

Rage Against The Machine - RATM.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 170 ✭✭Eron

Rage against the machine, good choice - brilliant band. Only ones who can pull off the rappymetal, if you ask me

    And they do it superbly

all of you seem to be forgetting alice in chains. Dirt is a timeless album. just listen to would? and feel the coolness.

Hmm tough choice. Would have to be between:
    • GNR - Appetite for Destruction
    • Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
    • Pink Floyd - The Wall
    • Metallica - black album

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 651 ✭✭✭Okie

AC/DC - Back In Black or Highway To Hell
    Pink Floyd - The Wall
Metallica - Black Album or Master Of Puppets or Ride The Lightning
Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous

    Too many to mention!

GNR- Appetite for Destruction-without a doubt.

You all realize we wouldn't have Hard Rock and Roll without LED ZEPPELIN II.

    Led Zeppelin: 1&2
    GNR: Appetite
    Pearl Jam: Ten
    Nirvana: Nevermind

Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous

manic street preachers /// the holy bible
    nirvana /// nevermind
    soundgarden /// superunknown
    sonic youth /// dirty
foo fighters /// there is nothing left to lose
    metallica /// load

Well...I think Guns N' Roses wins it! ;)

And Load is by far not the best 'Tallica album.

von... I hope that " " aimed at London Calling wasn't suggesting there's something wrong with the album...

Hmm honestly can't pick a best album but London Calling by the Clash and Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd are definitely up there... ya I know liking punk and Pink Floyd is supposed to be a paradox big enough to cause a rift in the space time continuum that would get Scotty running for some dylithium crystals, but phuck it :) Also Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy.

    Metallica - Black Album

Tough choice really but heres why:

    1. I know (most of) the words to all of the songs. Other albums I love but can't say each song has had an impact on me.

    2. I can listen to it no matter what mood I'm. Some Rock/Metal I can only listen to at a certain volume or in a certain circumstance.

    3. I never feel I'm imposing on my mates when I play it. People who don't like rock get pi$$ed off with other stuff but always appreciate a bit of the Black Album.

    4. I love music that provokes an emotional response in me. Some makes me angry, some sad etc. The Black Album has not just one emotion to it but loads.

    5. I normally get bored with an album after awhile, never with the black album.

    6. Its probably the album I listen to most which means even if I don't know it, that its my favourite I reckon.

    Close Runner Ups btw:

    Nirvana - Nevermind
Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
    Korn - Korn
The Band - Songs From Big Pink (OK, its not rock, sorry)
The Pixies - Death of the Pixies

I'm a little persuaded by the other posts, but not that much.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Caesar_Bojangle

Its has to be Rage against the machine the self titled album by ragtm.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 YeVaD

    hmm..
    i say

    - "Surfer Rosa/Come on pilgrim" by the Pixies
    - "Complete 'B' Sides" by the Pixies (2 cool neil young covers on it)
    most other Pixies albums.. :D
    - "Babylon" by Skindred
    - "Chaos AD" by Sepultura

RATM's first and most metallica is pretty cool but im not too into them... led zeppelin are cool but i only have latter days part 2.. havent even heard stairway to heaven

Trust me. The Spice Girls are more likely to be considered a better rock band than Korn.

Craig David, Ricky Martin then i suppose Led Zeppelin 1+2, Any of the beastie boys albums, nevermind, californication, anything hendrix and finally that ocean colour scene album with hundred mile high city on it, cant remember the name but from what i recall it was quite good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
Cradle Of Filth - Dusk... And Her Embrace

It would be those two albums that really got me into music in a big way, so I'm picking those because they're quite relevant to me.

I'd have to go with appetite for destruction too, how much more rock could you get that that album? Strangely I don't like any of G-N-R's other albums.

I think the Iron maiden album 'Killers' would be up there too.

I noticed some people have listed metal albums, shame on you!

And there's always the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert which was released on CD for a limited time. I wish I got a copy.
