From an article by Ciaran Brennan in today's Irish Times (8/6/02) page 19....

"Inadequate bandwidth has been singled out as the most widespread problem for businesses, according to a bandwidth survey carried out by the Telecom Regulator's office as part of its quarterly report.........

....The majority of companies, 61%, anticipate that their broadband requirements will change over the next 12 months. Almost a quarter of businesses believe they will need "a lot more" and a further two in five envisage needing "a little more" access.....

.....ISDN is the predominant access technology used by Irish business, the survey said, but repsondents indicated that DSL and wireless LANS are technologies that businesses will depend on more in the future......

So here we have it AGAIN! The operators tell us they have 100's of thousands of kilometres of dark (unlit) fibre lying around the country, more than enough capacity they tell us. They get upset when they are accused of having broadband wastelands and trot out maps of fibre encircling every county,YET businesses are saying they have not got sufficient capacity and 35% of the survey repsondents stated it is "impacted investment decisions in terms of where they decided to locate their points of operation".

Mary Hanafin welcome to the game.
