    Some speculative fun:-

Could we reach the second round without Germany, France, Italy, Argentina and Portugal, and if so who is most likely to benefit? England or Ireland?

Okay Germany got through, but France and Argentina are gone
(good riddence to the latter!) so who's next Italy anyone, they play Mexico and I would'nt bet against an upset. Potugal have South Korea to face and again a surprise may be not such a surprise...

Think you mean, there's _No way_ the above will fail to go throw. Come on... Portugal... maybe drawing with South Korea-- just can't see it. And of course Italy got through today.

    Not really!

They could have even lost todays match 3-1 and still got through.

I'd fancy Italy to beat Korea, but to answer your question, England will undoubtedly benefit more from all the big guns going out, as France and Argentina were on their side of the draw. Although they have beaten Argentina, and wouldn't have feared them anyway, England will benefit from playing Denmark instead of France. Not that the Danes will be pushovers, but I think its fair to say that they are a better draw than France.

I'd like to have seen Spain do well, but bugger it, they only went and drew Ireland in the second round. Damn.
