Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

For your new splash screen you should try and use dark colours other wise the text is hard to see on the buttons.

yeah i'm still looking for a sub for it. got the Gpo finished.

Or you could simply reduce the brightness of the picture with PhotoShop...

It took quite a while for me to perfect my VAR Mod Splash pic, so don't expect to get it perfect on the first go. Other than that, I like it. The buttons are quite nice too.

but the pic was from the civil war, and not 1916, so he'll have to change it anyway:p

i've really not been looking forward to doing the south quays. perhaps i'm a little biased. judge for yourself.
if you're a southsider, you'll be pretty angry after downloading this picture. but please, don't take my total apathy for you personally...

IT'S THE EASON'S CLOCK!!!! this took 10 seconds but i'm still proud. i've since added the actual clock. I'll show you easons when it's finished. i couldn't be arsed making the shop beside it so its just rubble. anything i don't want to do becomes rubble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

    [PISSED ORF]
    oh
    my
    god.

This 6page thread has all been about that? Good god. I could whip that up in 10 minutes. All of it!
    [/PISSED ORF]
    [CRITICISM][BEINGAWANKER]
Map is uber bland. No details or anything. ast tie i was in Dublin I was sure i saw buildings, no big huge empty spaces. None of the textures you use are suitable to the time period and most of them are even aligned incorrectly.

Building exteriors are not made of indoor office walls (last time i checked)

Eason's clock pic, south quays, wasteofspace walls pics are all totally irrelevant. Probly would have been better had you not posted them. The only pic wth promise (albeit a small amount) was the first one, and even then i can spt some major texture mistakes.

If this looks/plays well I'll eat my hat.
    [/CRITISICM][/BEINGAWANKER]

I had to get this off my chest. You understand I hope.

What program do u use to design those maps and what program to view them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

one of the first things i learned about mapmaking is that people are vultures, always nagging at you for more details, screenshots, info, and i was getting pretty angry about all that, so releasing crap screenshots and making people download them was my way of getting that off my chest.
you'll ge proper ones tommorow... promise

Its the first real map rob's done, in the sence that its gonna be avelable to download. Its not gonna be the best map the world has ever seen. Id say lots of us made lots of maps that dont live up to your standards :D:D (Dont kill me .... joke).

I think it looks great.... dont know why the tunnel is in there though.... its kinda a mix of everything since 1916 and not just stuff in 1916 ... still cant wait to play it. If you make sturmbot waypoints for it come over to my gaff and we will have a lan on my 2 PC's with a load of bots :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

ooh, i;m tingligh with excitement. as for the tunnel, i'll explain that in person, it;s a SECRET! SHHH!
and whenever you're ready winters, i've got 53 ****ing tutorials, faq's, hints, wads, prefabs, and a whole load of other ****e taking up half my hard disk when u want it :)

Do you not think that releasing terrible screenshots (ie the hollow rusty box you call a tunnel) will just entice people to ask for better screenshots? Tbh, they are nothing to get excited over. And please dont post "in-editor" screenshots.. At least have the "cop on" to post them ingame. They WILL look better.

i try to put up actual in-game shots when i can but for the last week i;ve been getting a compilre error AllocBlock: Full, which basically means iv'e got to resize every texture individually.

and can anyone tell me how to use the file on another computer without leaving behind all the textures, etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

Compile all the textures and bsp file into a zip or somefin. Put it on a CD or try to squeeze it onto a floppy.

A lot of the textures you use (hopefully) will all be in DoD/HL! If not you have to make your own wad file or somefin ... not to sure cos of my anti-1337 mapping skilz. Anywho... come over to my gaf fand ill setup a 2 player lan or somefin...

/me has bad news... no more Diagnosis Murder RTE showed the last one in the series today :(:(;)

Thats not what it means at all. It means that you have too many wads loaded into Quark. There is a texture memory limit of like 4mb in WC, not sure about Quark, but I'm sure it's around the same.

Reduce the amount of different wads and compile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

He, He. You really should try and stick to the normal wads on DoD.. It would cut down on the problem.

Im not too sure if ill be able to see you on Sunday... free gaff next weekend so we can have a laugh then :D:D

If this is Rob's first map, then fair play (Regardless of wether people think it's absolute toss or not) because it's obvious you're putting a lot of time and effort into the work, and haven't given up and thrown your monitor out the window like I usually do after 10 minutes mapping.

DrAkE, It's not up to us what pictures he posts - That, aswell as how he textures / aligns / comprises his map etc. I can't see why you're getting so huffy.

All Im seeing here is some picture from a mapper who is working hard on something, and a bit of annoying spam. I mean come on, I remember when I posted my first map picture yonks ago. It wasn't an attempt at a city, is was a rake of over sized blocks that I called buildings, and a few HUGE crates... despite being laughed at for some time, it evolved into de_gravel which is still ****e, but I'm proud of.

Give the guy a break, let him map his heart out and help him rather than slate him, and you never know what might happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

i actually played an early version of the map and its not half bad so far, just a few rough edges to sort out [such as large unexplained chunks of rubblee in o'connell st:confused: ]

shud b quite goud wen finished, look forward to playin it.

    Jimmy:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

    HEY!
those are fine chunks. they exist purely to make the map less dull. Lets not forget that o'connell st is more or less one long road, with a few side roads (talbot, henry). so i;ve had to incorporate large, unexplained chunks of debris into the map,. amongst other things such as rubble solely so the map is play for more than 5 mintutes and then someone says "say, THAt was pretty. lets play that CS stephans green map by jimeats, the talented one..."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,945 ✭✭✭Anima

Robb maybe you should edit the layout of the city for r_speed reduction because ifs its just one long street then they will be threw the roof. Also how big is the map?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

i know, i'm a bit worried about that. the map is huge, as in it takes up the entire area so i'm REALLY worried about the speed. how do i solve my compile problem?

how do i transer a .qkm file to another computer, complete with wad file?? how can i tell quark where to find the wad file enclosed???
    drake this means you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

You need to get a program that will compile the programs into .wad files as far as i know. Check the Quark site for downloads of compiler program things. You could get them from DoDHQ but the download site is still down.. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

i have the file, andihav the wad but how do i tell quark where the wad files is on another computer.
    Not using the texture browser.
