I was browsing through 56k.com and it lists 5 rules b4 buying a modem.

Rule no. 2. K56flex, x2, or V.90 Buy whatever your ISP uses. Was wondering what type of service eircom uses? Or does it differ for what exchange you're on?

K56Flex and X2 are obsolete and proprietary standards that were both replaced by v.90. All of the major ISPs support v.90 and any modem you buy today will support v.90.

v.90 itself was followed by v.92. Supposed to increase the upstream speed, better data compression, and substantially speed up the connect time (it can take 30 seconds for a v.90 handshake). Most new modems will support v.92 but I've not heard of any Irish ISPs supporting it yet. v.92 modems should connect just fine to v.90 servers so it's no harm to have it Just In Case.
