I'm in the market for a cheap CDR/RW with a bit of safety (less coasters - I allready have enough UK ISP ones).
I was looking at this on itdirect.
Aopen CD-RW Drive 12x10x32x with JustLink IR£119.99 (inc VAT). IS this JustLink stuf any good?
I really don't need a fast drive, 10x or 12x would be fine if it was reliable. I don't care about any software packages.
Just need to get one for about the IR£100-120. Prefably an Irish comapny too.
    Thanks lads/laddettes/misc

No one of us (not even gerry) could answer this better than Tom, who just happens to have a review of the AOpen.

    Yeah, at just £40,000 for a 2MB line, you're probably right :P

btw, plextor are my favourite too. but since everyone has burnproof now, it's a closer call.

I was thinking more like a 256Kbit line about 2-5Km from the exchange.
    From Esat too wink.gif

can you provide a reference for that? i might look into it

Ok, I'm basing the above staement on this link (I know its Eircon), and the people I've heard saying Esat is generally cheaper for leased lines.
Also, I said that a leased line would nearly be cheaper to emphasize the slim chance of my obtaining sucha service, be it satelite or land-based etc. etc.

about teh Aopen, Tom's site was fuzzy on the Burn-proof ability of it.
On the summary page there's a table of teh 4 drives tested (two Yahahas i think, a TDK and the Aopen I was looking at). The Aopen has a form of burn-proofing in this, but hardly a paragraph later he says it doesn't.
he does use slightlydifferent terminology for each instance though.
Emailed itdirect.ie about the possibility of getting a plextor. Got this today:
    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> From Email from Garret www.itdirect.ie :
    John,

I have the Aopen myself and it works very well, but we do Plextor
also if your set on it.

    PX-W1610TA Plextor 16x10x32x IDE Writer 182.09 IncVAT

That CDR is , I'm reliably informed, bugged to hell. Crap in other words.
I saw a Yamaha one for about £150 on the site. Ye wouldn't have any spot
bits lying in the back room by anyt=chance? Plextor maybe? wink.gif
