I know that even under the best of circumstances the idea is a contradiction in terms, but I need a good cpu cooler that will run quietly. I bought a 1.4 gig Amd athlon and a thermalright SK6 heasink. With a Delta 60mm Focussed Flow 43CFM fan i have the machine running comfortably at 22 degrees with a pretty steady CPU load of about 60% .. I still have to get around to testing it under prolonged 100% load. The problem is that it sounds like there is a jet engine under my desk, a whopping 50.5dBa. I am looking for a fan that will cool very well, but will run at under 30dBa.

heh, did you actually measure the loudness? or are you just quoting manufacturer's figures or something? smile.gif

In the last few weeks while i was looking up the bits and bobs for my new comp i read over 50 hardware articles/reviews/guides. Somewhere along the line i found a thing on quiet fans that actually do more work. Its late know and i'm up to my neck in my new computer but i'll have a look around for that acticle soon as i can.

A delta can usually be heard all over the house. If you read any reviews of a delta beforehand osi, they really weren't joking when they said it was stupidly noisy. Ys-tech are a little quieter, panaflo are much quieter. You will have to sacrifice performance for quietness I'm afraid. You should be able to get a 20-25 cfm fan which is quiet. The best way to quieten the thing down, is to fit a 120mm fan to the side of your case, duct it to the heatsink, and run the 120mm fan on 7 volts.

Cheers. I read all the reviews etc before gettin the parts for everything except the fan:/ Some genius had recommended delta as a good quiet fan ... ah well, I have ordered a 120mm panaflo. Hopefully it will do the trick.

www.overclockers.co.uk has the thermalright heatsink, and the fan that comes on the standard version is relatively quiet, and good performance, I think you can get it seperately for a few quid also
