Anyone else finding it pretty easy and not much of a challenge?
I realise im on the early missions but this is really taking the piss.
(yes im playing on hard :p )

    Heres hoping it gets harder

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,831 ✭✭✭Lucutus

Set it to hard, (instead of normal!), then :)

I've having trouble with "memory could not be 'read' " type errors, anyone else seeing this?

I can play snippets of the game, maybe even a whole level sometimes, then it crashes. :(

tried everything on the blizzard support site, to no avail, so if anyone has any tips or anything, reply or pm meh pls!

    thnx

yes i having the same trouble :(

think it's cheap memory(havent had the time to try it on a good machine yet.)

i booted into 98(from 2k)and that slowed down the rate at which they occoured.i think it might be an issue with win2k's HAL and instructions WC3 wants to execute

damn! one word 'Damn', this is one cool mutha****ing game!
Just got it on a friday and skipped sleep, food and sex to play this game. The game has a bit of everything, the beauty of 'dungeonsiege', the RPG of an 'Baldurs gate' The fighting frenzy of 'Battle realms' . The Heroes or main characters of the game are excellent and gives a nice twist. Unlike the previous RTS games this really needs a mixed group of soldiers if you want to complete anything which makes it more interresting. Many good idea's from the old 'Starcraft' implemented. Man oh man, i am now in the Undead missions, and the sound effects on my EAX surround card just does the trick!. The Battlenet gameplay is excellent and the servers in Northern Europe really does take care of my stupid irish-has-to-be 56K modem ping. First thing to do on the battlenet server, check the mod section , yups people have made classics as 'The maze' Tower defence' and so on :)

Must buy , do not copy , its worth every cent!

Playing on battle.net my 56k is like broadband in every single game.
Weve got serious netcode happening with this game,i recomend it to everyone.

on a side note, I saw NWN and WCIII in HMV Grafton St. for €66.99 each, while in Game Grafton St. they were €49.99 each.

Seems like a huge difference... (34% more)
How can they justify this? Exchange rate £ to €? Surely Game contend with the same?

I imagine they're cheaper still in Smyths Software Zone. 10% all new releases if you have a loyalty card. So thats €45.

    Guys

Do you have to have played WCII or Starcraft in order to play this?? Or could a complete beginner to RTS games pick it up fairly easily??

If anyone is interested, but is willing to wait a few days for delivery, play247 (www.play.com) have it for £26.99, which at current exchange rates works out at about €42.10, which is about as cheap as you'll find it.

To anyone having the C0000005 memory could not be 'read', Random Reboots and
    Crashes with Warcraft III...

You can find some things to try here on the battle.net forums.

I found a memory issue with my system and sorted it out, haven't had the error or a crash since...

I just got this yesterday, and I can honestly say it's friggin fantastic! I like the new hero system, much more RPG! it's brilliant. But, I'm usually very aprehensive about games that were 2D, and are updated to 3D. I mean, Take Dungeon Seige for example, compared to Baldur's Gate, it just doesn't feel in any way "Solid".
But Warcraft 3 is fine, it doesn't seem to suffer from this.

Make sure you have the patch installed if your having trouble. I'm nearly finished the game and I haven't had any problems at all on Win2000.

I was going to post my opinions of the game... But why don't you all go off and read my review of it instead. Including Mills' PC immortalised as "the crap machine that WC3 runs on so the system spec is alright then really" ;)

Very good review though I myself would find the small unit amounts preferable as by christ Im sick of rushes and and massive amounts of weak units (Zerg anyone?). Basically I want some more specialised troops

    From Shinji's review...
The limit may be there for balance purposes, but if so it’s a clumsy and cack-handed way to balance the game...

    lol @ 'cack-handed'

    Well written rob, interesting opinions.

Agree about the food limit, it is quite irritating, however it does lend itself to the 'small party of units and a hero' idea I think they are trying to get across.

Selection of a dozen units is fine tho, as WC3 is much more about the micro-management of those 12 than trying to select 20 units to throw at regi's zerg rush :)

Taking my time going through the single player game, (Chapter 8 of the undead campaign), and have lost on battlenet a few times to bloody rushing players.

    anyway, nice article Shinji :)

Though I'm notoriously easily impressed with RTS's having played them in all manner of ways, this is objectively speaking, the best 3D RTS out there atm. The game has its flaws, but the unit limit isn't one of them imho. The food limit isn't annoying persay- it's the only uncomplicated way to keep unit numbers down at all levels of play. Anyone who remembers Red Alert and the ridiculous one-unit rushes would agree I think.

With the exception of (patched) Starcraft, no RTS of that generation is unflawed in this respect: There is always a singular "best" tactic available in them, variance of unit grouping is often un-needed, perimeter defence structures are horribly inefficient compared to a clump of cheap cannon-fodder. Blizzard have been trying to get away from the large-scale battle phenom, beginning as they did with StarCraft. With the exception of a few rarely-played money-maps, the best strategy is a rapidly executed development of resources and primary units, quick scouting, and a quick end. Massive buildups were discouraged by the unit limit, and the difficulty of moving 12-unit groups cohesively- the Zerg get around this by being small units that can inter themselves.

The same limits on 12-unit groups and total unit numbers were in place in Starcraft- yet the most effective strategy until Brood Wars was a singular tactic. Muta rush for the Zerg, Marine stampede with the Terran, and a Zealot/Templar force for the 'toss. I for one, am glad they've decided to stick with small unit numbers, rather than the ridiculous ninja-hopping that previous RTS's required. A hero in command of a small attack force, a base defence force, and a unit defence force- simplicity is sometimes the best choice to make in a game. Tiberian Sun had elaborate perimeter fencing, and intricate possibilities for base design. Guess what- in multiplayer competition these structures were rarely built, the high-level units rarely used. Smart players simply used the simplest and most efficient strategies available, not the fanciest or the flashiest. Reducing the scale of the battles also means that planning them is all the more important, even for the Undead team. Each fight becomes that much more important, Blizzard want to remove "zerging" as a tactic.

The biggest improvement for me over previous games was the way LOS and ranged attacks have been handled. Instead of taking the most suicidal path to a firing positions, unit AI is a lot better than Starcraft. It's less necessary to watch your ranged units into position and micromanage their actions. All in all, good change of vision to shift to a small scale RTS- more fun, and more skill-requiring imho. For all the zerg-rush fans, Shogun, AOE II et al. will still provide endless fun.
