Hi I've just been reading in todays Times that Artsworld is to close at the end of the month. This is due to being unable to gain further finance from shareholders. Its lack of re financing is being blamed on BBC4.

I am very disappointed that this channel is going. I subscribed from day 1, enjoyed it and it does not appear I will be viewing BBC4 so I am not best pleased. And Mr. Sarky, I don't complain about football or GAA though I have zero interest in both, I have enough good manners to accept the truth of each to their own.

What about Digital Classics TV? Is this the same kind of output? It's FTA now.

I like that too but it is limited in content compared to artsworld. I was also gutted when .tv went too. It seems I am destined to be an uncatered for minority lol.

Even though I never saw Artsworld (never subscribed) as somebody who loves classical music, but isn't interested at all in things like architecture, poetry etc. I must say that, personally, Digital Classics, which is almost exclusively classical music and opera, is more my cup of tea. But fair play to those who preferred Artsworld, and for this reason alone, I'm sorry to see it close.

Discuss: Why do you reckon Artsworld really closed?

Presumably it catered to an exclusive, affluent audience - good in theory for gaining subscriptions, good in theory for selling ads / sponsorships etc.

I have a hunch that the satellite proliferation of channels is not sustainable - either you become very specialist, and then try to gain income through subs (which is difficult to do), or you try to find a niche among a sweaty brood of channels, basing your offering on a popular concept - such as comedy, repeats, gameshows, health, outdoors, nature, etc etc. (and hope there is an advertising buck in it for you).

If neither works out, you're screwed.

What we may end up with after a period of shake-out are dominant general channels and dominant pay-services (probably movies and sports), and far less channels over all. None of this bodes well for quality TV.
