What are peoples views on Back Yard Wrestling in Ireland? My neighbour seven doors down has a BYW gropu called 'Celtic Backyard Federation' and they all think they are real wrestlers because they can do some moves.

i always thought of backyard wrestling as teenage dress up and play - its akin to cowboys and indians and if they think differently they are fooling themselves- if you want to wrestle then go to wrestling school - i hear that one exists in dublin and cork and if i read it corretly in some post, they are connected with hammerlock

BYW is a touchey, i feel that byw is ok as long as they arent throwing each other through glass on hitting each other with light bulbs, i think messing arounf with tie ups lock and basic moves can be ok if you have mats and you arent trying anything crazy.
The biggest problem comes from when the backyarders consider themselves wrestlers and start looking for work with real promotions:rolleyes:

That is very true. I like to have alaugh by doing submission moves and cutting crap promos on whos ever there, but most of these guys wants to do moonsaults, senton bombs, barb wire matches etc. It crazy as hell, and do show 'Secrets of Pro-Wrestling to any one new as a why of teaching moves.

One guy is getting onto promoters in England saying he's a wrestler and can he get work. Can you imagine him in the ring with a real wrestler? He wouldn't be a able to call a move work a crowd, etc.

eggs, are you seriously trying to tell people that secrets of pro wrestling should be viewed by some stupid kid as a training video - if you are you are an idiot - thats the kind of attitude that leaves silly teeneagers paralized or worse dead - it is a dangerous sport and should only be performend under the supervision of properly trained instructord . . period!!!!!!!!!!

Eggs is saying that a lot of Backyards thought of that program as an instructional video,

backyard wrestling is ok aslong as

    a) you are merely faking it
    b) if you have to use blood, use red sauce or colouring
    c) never ever do a move that will compress the neck or vertebre
    d) never use stuff like chairs, lightbulbs, graters, nails, etc
    e) if you have to, fake it like the big boys

I stole this from memory from Mick Foley's unoffical rules for backyard wrestling - it says a lot

Hell I did BYW when I was younger, but I faked it (guess I really hate pain). I knew guys that cut themselves open big time, and to be honest they just fcuked themselves up, horrible scars, etc.

If insist on BYW do it for sheer fun, but if you think it will lead into a wrestling carrer then you are only kidding yourself. Get into a decent school, learn the moves and most of learn them right

cmb. You misread my post, I'm trying to get the point across that these BYW'ers use S.O.P.W as a training video. I don't agree with. And Ph 30m30 (Or whatever) makes a perfect point also, have fun as long as you don't do dangerous stuff. Most importantly, know your limitations and when to stop.

well if i missread you then i apologise but you said "and do show 'Secrets of Pro-Wrestling to any one new as a why(way?) of teaching moves" so it seamed to me like you were promoting showing that programme as an instructional manual - tjats the way it seems to me but as you say, i could be missunderstanding the way youve worded your reply

if you mare into performing then surely you would enjoy it much more if you were recievung propper training instead of just aping what you see on t.v. and i am very suspicious about kids or teenagers getting carried away with what they saw on t.v. and trying to imitate some of that stuff - and that is a legitimate concern - wrestling has bad enough press as it is and it doesnt need another tate or similar case (yes i know that in that case the wwe were not at fault but its all bad publicity and creates a negative perception and adds to those who want to find something to complain about)

It's hard to say about Backyard wrestling. I mean who hasn't as a child went out and wrestled for fun. I think the one where you are just having fun is ok. But doing pildrivers and swanton from trees etc. is just stupid.
