big server or small servers ...

    If you were presented with the problem of equipping for maximum redundancy in a database, which would you do:

    (a) Blow your wodge on high-availability hardware from big brand name, or
    (b) Buy redundant cheaper hardware with common elements (nics, PSUs, raid) duplicated, and backup and mirror.

    What's the best rule-of-thumb for db server purchase anyway?

    i would go for (b) , but with the caveat that i would buy a nice hardware raid card...and put the database on a raid 5 not a mirror. then backup the whole lot.

    are you thinking along the lines of setting up a cluster as well?

    ALways b, but don;t scrimp on the components - check out somewhere like www.encom.ie for quality built servers/.
