Well i'm trapped behind a firewall here in work and the only port thats open (afaik) is the defualt http port 8000 or something. Is there anyway to use irc through it. Web based java clients don't work either.

Im behind afirewall myself. What I do is:

    Install MIRC
DONT change any settings to do with firewalls
Hit connect, then hit disconnect right away
Then hit connect again and it goes through
Takes a GOOD while to get through and open the channels but it eventually works.

This mightny work for you but its just my experience.

The only thing that i can think that would make the connect disconnect connect strategy that lex_diamnonds mentions work is that mirc has some servers with multiple ports listed so whilst 6667 may be blocked it will try 6668 (eg) next and connect.

Find out from an admin what ports the server you use runs off and you can connect with /server server.name.tld:port

However a decent firewall should have them all unnecesary ports blocked and its unlikely to work for everyone.

If your http proxy allows the connect statement trillian (www.trillian.cc) has an option to connect via a http proxy which has worked for a number of people I know. Config the proxy with the same details as in your browser and connect as normal.

If you have access to a local shell account with the ports unblocked you could create an ssh tunnel with the latest version of putty. Setup a local port (eg 4000) and the remote name and port and use /server localhost:4000 to connect.

Other options include "BNC" if you can get it running and or "cgi:irc" things which are only for the truly desperate. Google searchs on the terms should turn up something.

    Use a CGI:IRC client

    or

Use http:Tunnel and configure your IRC client (mIRC, ...) to use it as a proxy.

    Hi,
You could always ask an ircop on the irc network for assistance. They may have servers/ports for people behind firewalls. E.g., I opened port 80 as a port on one of my servers once for someone who used to work at a place that only allowed port 80 stuff.

    Another CGI:IRC client is www.mouselike.org.

The current version of mIRC (6.something, and possibly 5.x too) has built-in support for HTTP proxies. It works for me in college anyway :)
