Any response to this article from today's Enniscorthy Echo ? I'm a peripheral lurker, an innocent "No Limits" exile (banished...), and I do not understand all the in's and out's of bundling/FRIACO/DSL/wireless etc... but in the context of ongoing comments regarding Esat's viability... is the article below newsworthy, and is it reason for any hope at all for those of us in the sunny southeast??

    To wit:

Enniscorthy Echo, Wed, 17 July 2002

Streets to be dug up again??

Communications giants, Esat have applied to Enniscorthy Town Council and Wexford County Council to install a duct from the Railway Station along Templeshannon, Shannon Quay across Seamus Rafter Bridge and into Friary Place.

Councillors at Monday night’s monthly meeting of the Town Council were against this as it would mean ripping up the streets of Enniscorthy and result in some streets, most notably Templeshannon, being closed for a number of days while work is being carried out. The route will be in the road at Templeshannon as the footpath is over congested. The ducting will be laid along the grass area adjacent to the riverbank in Shannon Quay. It will be laid across the new bridge in the footpath and through the car park area opposite the Post Office and then along Friary Place.

The advantages? Once installed it will bring fast, always-on Internet access to Enniscorthy. The process has already been installed in Limerick and by December of this year, Esat hope to have unbundled 40 exchanges which can potentially serve 4000,000 lines.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is the name given to the technology that provides a dedicated circuit between the customer and a telephone exchange. This allows customers to have a high-speed data transfer over existing copper telephone lines, creating always-on Internet access.

Town engineer Gerry Crowley made a very detailed presentation to the members last Monday night. Afterwards a discussion took place and there were worries stressed about tearing up the streets of Enniscorthy again.

Town Clerk, Donal Minnock urged the councillors to take the report home and study it. He will, meanwhile, get in touch with Esat and ask representatives to attend the next meeting.

Well if you're in Wexford or Enniscorthy and you want Esat DSL I'd get lobbying for this. Esat need to dig up the road to get in their cable to connect with their collocation space in the eircom exchange,

Also, if you want this to succeed, it might be worth getting in touch with local businesses pointing out the advantages of ADSL over ISDN/dial-up for internet access and get them to also lobby the council.

If there is no lobbying by local businesses and individuals, quite likely. It looks like in the past there was a lot of digging with not much benefit to the community and the tone of the article suggest that people are not keen for more.
