I've been happily using WinMx at work (fast connection) for the last 8 months. All of a sudden I cannot connect. I suspect that the IT dep have blocked the ports Mx uses. I can still access the internet (http port 80). Is there a way round this or am I shagged ?

They've probably installed a transparent proxy which will only allow http traffic out (maybe ftp too). What exactly can you no longer connect to? IRC/Games/Kazaa etc.. IF these were working before and are no longer working then you may be screwed!

Are you able to ping or telnet to another machine?

Also, if you are stuck behind a transparent proxy and the only ports allowed out are http you may be able to use a socks proxy to allow you to irc etc.. you can check out totalrc I think that is the URL.

same thing happend with me. found a program called HTTP-Tunnel that gets past the firewall by going through port 80. horrendously slow though and can't get it to work with Kazaa lite or morpheous.

Ive only been using Winmx and Kazza.. now I cant use either. I tries running a program that probes the ports to see which are open and only 3 came up... 1 been port 80. I'm a bit concerened about http tunnelling as I dont want to get fired.. :D however if there are any other suggestions as to how I might get this working it would be much appriciated. I dont think Im using a proxy because if I go into my internet connections in Lan setting there are no settings setup (whatever that means). I presume if I was going out over a proxy this would have to be setup in my internet connections ?

well the http tunneling is so slow i don't even use it.
does anyone know what ports Kazaa uses? my sys admin might open them for me, small company etc.

When your going through a transparent proxy it won't show up as a proxy in internet explorer. I set it up at home testing and it requires no changes on the workstations accessing the internet to allow it to work.

If your IT dept has blocked off your use of Kazaa and WinMX there is probably a reason ... i.e. You've been wasting their bandwidth and they've decided to go BOFH on you.

When Kazaa starts up it connects to a server on port 24 but the actual port that the connections run over is 1214.

WinMX is normally blocked by blocking the IP's 209.61.186.0/24 and 64.49.201.0/24.

Hopefully some people out there have friendly admins ;) If I adminned a network I'd have them locked down.

the speed is limited to 3k a sec. for unregistered users.
it costs **** all to register and works incredibly well with great speeds.
