network probs

I've networked 2 pcs here and there are some problems with em,

They're on an 8 port 10Base-T hub - both are running windows xp professional and both are fairly new 1ghz and 2ghz machines.

Everything works - ICS, gaming, file sharing

    The problem is :

file sharing is really slow, when you try to browse another computer it can lock up windows - and when files are transferred between the computers the speed is 20kpbs-40kpbs. It works just really badly.

I think it has to be either a dodgy network card in one of the machines or something is fucted with the hub, because i've gone through all the proper configuration procedures many times and I can't find anything wrong with the configuration. No firewall, ips assigned properly, subnet assigned, cards running at full duplex all the proper protocols added and configured.

    Does anyone have any ideas

Card's should not be running at full duplex on a hub, chop it to half duplex or use a crossover cable.

yeah, if there's only 2 pcs use crossover. crossover will transfer up to 100mb/s whereas using a hub will work up to 10mb/s afaik.

providing of course that the cards are 100mbit... A 100mbit hub will also of course run at 100mbit shared amongst all connections.

like everyone has said, get a crossover cable for now, but buy a 100Mbit switch from a decent brand, do a litle bit of googling for reviews on it before hand too.
use Cat5e cable for the crossover. 2 mins googling will turn up the wiring diagram for the crossover cable.
A crimpers can be bought for E22 in peats, cable is cheap too, RJ45 heads are about 36c a go.

    Have you got netBEUI installed?
SPX/IPX set to 802.3 frame type and not auto?
    what are your TCP/IP settings?

Post up the output from a "ping" command.

what network cards are you using?

Set them to 100Mbit fullduplex if you can, never mind that auto-negotiation stuff if they're all on the same level.
