I think 'goth' is defined as the ability to inform anyone else (in great detail) why they're not a real goth.

Or, if you're a trendy goth, as the ability to post stuff like "MaRiLyN mAnSoN RuLeZ yOuR sOlE!111!11!! dIe SaD tEeNyBoPpErS!!111!11!/" all over every message board you come across, in complete sincerity. And possibly in 'l33t'.
