Win XP : Error 624 Connection Wizard

I've got WinXP on a PC here (some Dell, PIII). When I try to create a dial up connection using the Dial Up Wizard it goes most of the way, asking me for my username/password and phone number, but when I click finish to create the connection it gives me the error message:

"Error 624: the system could not update the phonebook file".

I've checked the interweb and the only fix I could find for this was reinstalling Dial Up Networking if you're using Win9x, or reinstall RAS if you're using NT.

Unfortunately I've got XP and I'm not sure how to go about reinstalling DUN. I've already done a "netsh interface ip reset log.txt" in a command prompt, which is supposed to fix some TCP/IP errors in XP, but that hasn't fixed this problem.

Other than reinstalling XP altogether, anybody got any fixes?

I haven't done this in a while, so I'm not sure how well it would work with XP, but you could try creating a .dun config file and just installing that (easy way: grab a unison CD or something, copy the .dun file off it and edit it to put in your dialup's details).

Is the modem installed/setup properly? I've seen the 2000 connection wizard do all sorts of weirdness when there was a problem with the modem

This has something to do with the rasphone.pbk file, its on nt, win2k and XP

    Check the permissions on it.

It is a standard text file so i dont see the harm in renaming it and creating a new one in its place, copying and pasting the old info in.

in win2k its in the following path, though searching for rasphone.pbk should find it.

    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk"

    hope this helps.
