    A pentium 4 1.7ghz
    Or.....
    An Athlon XP 1800+

I would lean towards the Athlon

    Agreed.

    Cue Gerry...

I'd go for the Athlon myself, as that's a Willamette core P4, and won't be up for much overclocking.

If you want to go P4, go for a Northwood. I for one have a 2GHz Northwood that runs at 2.76GHz without pushing.

    Cue me.

Since that is a williamette p4, I'd go for the athlon, as it will be faster. I think you may be talking about full machines here, not sure though.

What did you think I was going to say PPC?

That I'd recommend the much slower williamette p4?
It just shows that you have never bothered to read many of my posts very thoroughly.

....that may make it worth going for the Northwood core P4 and 845g chipset combo soon.

dunno if AMD have anything majorly groovy in the near pipeline.

    check tomshardware.com , i usually do b4 big buys.
