(please move to another board if appopriate)

Working in a company (Well, part of...)
    with aprox 400pcs -
each has a computer manufacturer's barcode and a company assigned barcode(currently being put in place)-
what is required is a system that can connect to a MS Access database that is already in existance and upload/download information from it (using its already defined fields/tables/etc). the scanner itself would ideally be a PDT(Portable Data Terminal),whereby 1 member each in section of the building could scan the computers (and gather the barcode data)contained in it and modify the database with this information from their pc.
Does anybody use/recommend a system or point me in the right direction? (Preferably an Irish source;) )

It's been 7 years since I played with something like this.

However most barcode readers (in those days) would send the data to the terminal as if it is pressed in on a keyboard, or write it to a file which could easily be imported. I would guess most would do this easily.

Could try www.visionid.ie (Note: this is not an endorsement, I do not know what this company is like).

    Asset tracking? :)

The New IBM machines come with radio asset tracking. It has a small radio transmitter where by the person checking the asset only has to be near to the machine instead of having to get under desks and whatnot to find the code, also allows them to track machines leaving the building. Might want to investigate into something like that?

Another option is to have the machine report back it's asset number either by a program or the user and then query the machines once a week/month and any missing do a manual wander for them.

that sounds more like a 'wedge'. we need something more portable - that a user can walk around with-collect data-then send it back to the DB from their pc.
they're pcs, so unfortunately they dont come with that feature :) they won't endorse the funding required for me to set something up using BTooth and .... ;)
if anyone wants to flog their company: please do :) however, please note: all we really want is the PDT (+functionality to connect to the DB) -not a full system

I think I know exactly what you want.

A handheld (DOS based) batch terminal with built in laser scanner.
Data capture runs on the unit, you walk around scanning your parts/fixed assets/whatever, when finished go back to host PC and drop terminal into cradle and it uploads a txt file to your PC which can then be imported in excel.

Of course these things come at a cost.
If you want I can send you details of a company I know that specialise in that sort of stuff.
