Every so often you get a gem of a song in a movie or musical. I was trying to think of some but they wouldn't come to me.

The only one i can think of at the min. is:
Pure Imagination form Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory.

Can yee think of any more?

The Oompa Loompa song for a start.

You mean songs first introduced in movies don't you?

I thought Summer in the City really worked at the start of Die Hard WAV leading into the explosion but that wouldn't count I suppose.

Disney have the very occasional gem.

Thats actually from Badlands, and yes its outstanding :)

Wouldnt they come under the 'score' category rather than songs tho?

As time goes by is up there:)

The very end of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Cruising through the desert in a semi-destroyed Cadillac with "Jumping Jack Flash" blaring out and an American flag limply hanging from the remains of the roof. Superb.

Then again that song has allready been well known for almost 10 years but it still made a good ending.

The Matrix had a fair lot of good songs in it and i still regulary play the soundtrack to the film.

"Drown" by the smashing pumpkins was written especially for the movie, Singles. It's a beautiful song with tear-jerking lyrics and an amazing feedback solo as an outtro.

<edit>just saw thebhoy's post there. I really can't understand why people like the O Brother soundtrack so much. It won an award for best soundtrack didn't it?

as for all time best soundtracks, I'd have to go for the Magnolia soundtrack, comprising mostly of Aimee Mann songs.</edit>

we're really not talking about soundtracks.

The Doors - The End.. fits the beginning (and end) of Apocalypse Now brilliantly.

These Boots Were Made For Walking from Full Metal Jacket also deserves a mention (actually theres quite a few apt and humorous songs played in that film).. Hello Vietnam, Birds The Word (when he gets his first kill) etc..
