    The Register
UK consumers can get broadband access for under £20 per month for the first time.

In the last week, ET Global Solutions launched a rock-bottom residential USB package for £18.95 (including VAT) and fairADSL began offering an ADSL package costing £18.99 per month.

There's an activation fee of around £60 for both services, and then (in common with other ISPs) consumers will have to fork out for ADSL modems and a micro-filter. Both packages are (naturally enough) self-install.

Contention ratios of 50:1 are offered by both services.

With BT's wholesale ADSL price of £15 there seems precious little margin for these providers to turn a profit, as sums calculated by ADSLguide.org highlights.

Despite this, fairADSL is confident its "no frills" service is viable despite its low price.

isnt it unusual that eircom say they have given up a lot of latency to reach out for more customers for dsl, yet their limit is 3 - 3.5 km from the exchange, the same as it is in the UK ??? but yet, in the Uk, latency is twice, sometimes 3 times faster ???

    better quality product my ass

The UK uses RADSL which can operate at up to 6KM or so from the exchange as it has a dynamic upload speed which adjusts itself to the line condition. Most people still get the full speed though, and everyone does within the 3.5km.

RADSL would be even more suitable for Ireland. In fact, used the fact that Ireland has a very low density population to argue for very high LLU charges (rejected by the ODTR), yet subsequently they chose standard ADSL over RADSL.

Wow, £18.95/month for ADSL is pretty cheap. The lowest price I had seen in the UK before this was £22.49 (in an ad at the back of this months Adobe GoLive magazine).

Why are people still comparing prices ? Its fairly obvious that Ireland is a total and utter rip off for any sort of phone service
