Well Urban legend would have it that the saddest song of all time is Gloomy Sunday as sung by Billie Holiday. There are stores about it causing people to commit suicide and American radio having to band the "great suicide song".

Placebo - Pierrot The Clown (I know it's 2006, but it beats any other song I've ever heard before, though Placebo - Twenty Years can't make me happy either)

Every other sad song is mostly that because of the memories associated and not because the songs are that sad by themselves (i.e. RHCP - Otherside). And as well half of Radiohead's releases could compete here:) Together with The Cranberries.

I remember when I was about 7, 'Puff the Magic Dragon' came on the radio one morning and I started crying over that bit at the end where the kid fecks off and leaves him! I realise now there are laws and things that stop you hanging around too much with amphibious fauna but at the time it was emotional.

Some good ones mentioned, would make a point of seconding 'For No One' by The Beatles.

I'm currently trying to encourage the powers that be in Phantom Towers to play some Television Personalities and they're on my mind, so:

    Television Personalities - Three Wishes
Television Personalities - Now You're Just Being Ridiculous
Television Personalities - The Girl Who Had Everything
Television Personalities - Everything She Touches Turns To Gold

Leaving aside stuff by bands that would be regarded as 'dark':

Bob Dylan - You're A Big Girl Now
Thin Lizzy - Saga Of the Ageing Orphan
    The Revenants - Aldebaran

The Reindeer Section - Your Sweet Voice

    also
    Ben Folds - Late

And a song which always makes me cry but i cant remember what it is..little help?
" Now there ae no friends to only pass the time no more colouring books no christmas bells to chime....."
    (

That would be Going Back, by the Byrds. Patsy Cline also had a version.

I can't believe the Johnny Cash version of Hurt only got one mention. That and I Hung My Head both get me searching for a straight edged razor every time.
BUT, the saddest song ever, and once again I am shocked that it wasn't mentioned: Eric Clapton, Tears in Heaven.
    Obvious choice I know.
For some inexplicable reason I always find Octupus's Garden by the Beatles really sad too.

"hung my head" is a good one....for me antony and the johnson's "hope there's someone" is pretty damn depressing and also Bobby Goldsboro "honey" a song form the 60's about some guy's wife dying it's cheesy but sad none the less... i do like a good sad song.

YES! Also "Bright Sunny Smiles" or "Happy All The Time" for depression mixed with bitter irony. Or what about their cover of George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity"? Combined with the fact that it's the last track from the last album before Dan Treacy went missing, it's pretty much the most gutwrenching thing you could possibly hear...

    Holy Resurrection, Batman!

I started this thread over four years ago. What the hell, I don't even know what the songs I posted about are anymore.

My saddest song of all time now is 'Someone New' sung by that crappy all girl choir La Scala or whatever. Or possibly the version of Hey Ya by Matt Weedle ( which you can see here )

I noticed as much when I gave Lamda a call to let her know the name of the track she'd been asking about. She told me that she hadn't posted here for years.

Ah well. One may as well resurrect a thread as start a new one about the same thing.

    NIN suck
I'd argue with you, but your list of songs robs your opinion of any credibility whatsoever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

Sad songs I can think of:

    Televators - Mars Volta
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Zeppelin
Life Ain't So ****ty - Blind Melon(not that directly "sad", but to me hearing it is so sad and haunting, RIP Shannon :'( )

I have a hard time labelling songs "sad", the ones that are blatantly sad are usually contrived and crap, but the better ones are usually more filled with emotion and/or deep than "sad"....

That's quite a list there! I've embolded all the ones I find really sad. Adding to that list I'll have to agree with what someone mentioned a few posts back, Pierrot the Clown by Placebo, It's very sad. Also Severance by Dead Can Dance. I know what you mean about Romeo and Juliet, that song gets me too!

I don't slag other people's music tastes, however, I believe I have enough musical knowledge to evaluate whether someone slagging a band has a credible opinion on just what they're slagging or whether it's a ignorant statement.

wow, its been so long since ive posted here!

someone pm'd me about a song i put on this thread years ago and it made me wanna add to the list again.

"a distorted reality is now" by elliot smith

the lyrics are so honest. "cos its raining in my heart" -that must be one of the most disturbing thing i've ever heard written. I guess everyone can relate to it a little though.

Into My Arms certaintly, actually a fair portion of the boatmans call could be included in this.

Wow this is an old post but had to add a few...

Johnny Cash has been mentioned but for me his versions of 'I see a Darkness' and 'Sunday Morning coming down' are pretty rock bottom particularly with a hangover..

Ian Brown - Corpses in their Mouths
Sinéad O'Connor her version of Nothing compares to you
    Bruce Springsteen -Highway Patrolman
The Killers version of Romeo & Juliet

and of course Kirsty & Shane with the Fairytale of New York, but only at Christmas with a few jars..
