I'd have to go with either
Blue Oyster Cult - Dont Fear The Reaper
    or
Dream Dance - Matrix II (Trance Mix)

    what about you lot?

    all time, eh?

broke it down to a few candidates...

    Air - Casanova 70
JS Bach - Air for a G String
David Gray - This Years Love

I've trouble deciding, so I've fired down the contenders:

    (Ambient)
    Jaffa - Elevator
Groove Armada - At The River
Groove Armada - Inside My Mind
Fila Brazillia - A Zed and Two L's
Fila Brazillia - Soft Music Under Stars
    Orbital - Halcyon & On & On
    Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds
Klf - Chill Out (album, one big long song - might knock you into a coma)
    Daft Punk - Voyager
    Leftfield - Melt
    Zimpala - New Home
    Avalanches - Summer Crane
Deadbeats - Funky For You (Spacehopper remix)
    StGermain - Montego Bay Spleen
    StGermain - Sure Thing
Jon Hopkins - Lost In Thought
    Lux - Secret Fish
Zero 7 - Give It Away
    Kinobe - Skyscraper
    Kinobe - Hammock Island
Blue States - The Trainer Shuffle

    (Non-Ambient)
    Pink Floyd - Echoes
    Sting - Fields of Gold
    Coldplay - Sparks
    Radiohead - Bullet Proof
    Radiohead - The Tourist
    Cardigans - After All...
Beck - Nobody's Fault But My Own
    Bob Dylan - Forever Young
Stone Roses - Shoot You Down
Elvis - I Can't Help Falling In Love With You
Elvis - You Were Always On My Mind
Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World

After taking time to list them (which are obviously just the songs that I know), I reckon it has to be Echoes by Pink Floyd.

    relaxing tune ever!

also by FutureMusicCorp (thats enough plugs-ed!) :D

    Mike.

    p.s. I'll win a prize latter! :D

Múm - K/Half Noise (or Ballad Of The Broken Birdi.. equally good)
    Bjork - Headphones
    Mogwai - Now You're Taken
Spiritualized - Going Home or You Know It's True
Funki Porcini - Purrfect (or Going Down)
    Yo La Tengo - Saturday

Those Orbital, and Blue Oyster Cult songs mentioned are two of my favorites to calm down to... Really fantastic, dreamy stuff.

    Here's a few more.

    Anathema - Inner Silence/Shroud Of False/Everwake/Fragile Dreams
My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel/Sear Me MCMXCIII
    Tweaker - Linoleum
Mesh - You Didn't Want Me

But I'll have to say that "Anathema - Everwake" is the best of all.
Just an acoustic guitar peice, with some of the most haunting and beautiful vocals I've ever heard.
I really reconmend that everyone who posted on this thread check it out.

Here are some of my favourite "relax tracks" (to steal the name of a slot on local drivetime radio)

Fields Of Gold- Sting or Eva Cassidy

Ocean Drive-Lighthouse Family (what a DAMN cool song!)

Anything by Enya (but especially Orinoco Flow)

    And on the classical side-

    Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony"

And not forgetting my favourite of all-

Massenet's "Meditation"-which is a fantastic piece of "calm down" music. I enjoy doing yoga, and I sometimes use this while I do my stretches.

i'd hardly call the drum rhythm in stem-long stem relaxing.. I don't think hallelujah by jeff buckley is either; it's a bit too emotional for it to be relaxing.

A favourite of mine which hasn't been mentioned is Aphex Twin - Cliffs. Basically anything on SAW2 actually.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24 staring elf

stem-long stem is very relaxing. it's over 9 mins long and the drum build up you mention is only about 2 mins of that, the rest is piano, strings and samples.

I think Benighted is Opeth's mellowest song.

The Beach Boys - In My Room
    Lucy Pearl - Dance Tonight
    Massive Attack - Teardrop
Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives
    Leftfield - Melt
Otis Redding - Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay
Blackalicious - Make You Feel That Way
    Orbital - Halcyon
    Marlena Shaw - California Soul
Dj Shadow - Blood On The Motorway
    Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Most of the above have already been mentioned. As for the single most relaxing song of all time, I have no idea.
