Now that we've gotten over the formalities and I've been introduced to myself, is there anyone else out there.

In fact is there even anyone in Longford, Roscommon or Offaly.

Not in Westmeath but from there orginally.

That's better than I'd hoped for. My next step was to look for people who had passed through on the N4 or N6.

Somehow, eventually we'll get a beer bash out of this

I don't live in Westmeath (Laois, actually) but I have relatives and a farm interest there, and travel to there often. And my family knows that Cassidy fella. Do I count.

Hiya, I'm from Offaly. I've horrible memories of Westmeath actually- used to go to the dentist in Athlone....:(
I lived with a guy from Westmeath last year in college, he stuck up for me when the Kilkenny lads were slagging me about our disgraceful defeat in the All-Ireland hurling final in 2000. Of course, Westmeath haven't won much either....just kidding!! Dont want to annoy any Westmeath people this early!!!:p

If you know Donie Cassidy you'll be loved in Castlepollard, okay in Mullingar and bricked out of it in Athlone.

Westmeath won the Under 21 football title a few years ago and thats about as good as it got. This year has been ****e to say the least, especially after last years antics.

Still no sign of anyone from Longford, might drive through Edgeworthstown on the way home and see if it's boarded up.

That explains the seven posts a day. I'm up the road near Mullingar so I've nothing to laugh about either.

Good to see there's at least a few people around. Didn't manage to find anyone in Edgeworthstown on Friday, though I'm sure I saw a curtain move.

I'm from Meath....Athboy to be precise, but close enough to Delvin that I could spit into it on a windy day.
    Have relatives in Castlepollard though

Athboy and Delvin, you are spoilt. I pass through both quite often on my way to Navan(that's another story), but have never stopped other than for a cake. Any good pubs/nightlife or am I being far too optomistic.

Useless fact: You cannot buy fresh cream cakes anywhere in Mullingar

i was in mullingar yesterday and can i just say:

    what a kip!!!

As much as I hate to say it Occidental, Athboy ain't such a bad place to go out in. Just lately, I have sort of rid myself of a so-called friend and things have opened up for me a lot since I did so. Its almost like he was an anchor on my social life there.
For recommendations, I'd say Dorans bar in the middle of the town - 2 floors, live music, drinks aren't very expensive, seriously good talent in there, Graham Geraghty (Ex-Meath GAA Team( manages the place, fairly late serving. Only bad thing is the 5 euro cover charge if a band is playing.

Of course you can. Any reasons in particular, good/bad points?

    Syl,

I'll have to try Dorans, but I'm not sure how long I will last in a Meath GAA bar.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 224 ✭✭SYL

Dont' worry, its not a GAA bar, bit of a trendy hideout. You won't see many kepak jerseys in there, I tells ya.
Plus, I'll be there, what other reason do you need :D

I'd just like to state for the record that me and Slaanesh are not the same person...I think. Unless I've been sleep-posting or something?

    Lo all!
I'm from Mullingar myself. Don't really surf these boards too much though. I'm living in Copenhagen these days and I use these forums to just keep in touch with home a bit.
And can I just say my home town is a LOT better than some other places I've seen. Every time I return there are small improvements and changes being made.
You must remember that compared to the rest of Europe Ireland is still a very young country and in many respects still a developing economy. And in case you're from Dublin porno and have the idea it's a modern vibrant cosmopolitan capital city, let me assure you... it's not (yet).

There a very nice cafe called Ilia on Oliver Plunkett St. It's beside the Days Bazaar book store. The staff are very friendly, the coffee is excellent and I believe they have all manner of sweet things. Sweetest being the french girl that served me last time I was there. Yum.

    Photty,

I think Mullingar is gradually improving, which is why I asked Porno (who is from Athlone) for more details. The restaurants and pubs have improved beyond belief in the last few years, though there's plenty more room for improvement. I'll have a look out for IIia on Saturday morning and see if I can find a French girl with nice buns.

Must keep an eye an all these Meath people with links to Castlepollard, make sure Meath isn't on the move.

I'm from Mullingar - living in the US temporarily but actually in Mullingar this week! Even in the year since I left it has changed a lot. Like photty said it is better than a whole lot of other places that I have been. I guess if you have seen a bit of the world then you appreciate the good points of where you are from more ;)

porno you are from Athlone? ha ha. nuff said :)

    Hey Occidental,
Are you from castlepollard then? My mother is from there and I have plenty of mates from the village. You know the balls or the o'mearas? Some of the soundest people I know are from pollard :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,315 ✭✭✭Occidental

No, I'm south of Mullingar. The Castlepollard comment was in response to the lads from Meath, who all appear to have links with the town. Don't know anyone from Castlepollard apart from a few people at Mergon, but don't think they're from the town.

Is anyone from Westmeath coming over to Tullamore for the Phoenix festival? There's loads of stuff happening over the weekend and Loughreys bar is opening tonight. The Revs are playing tonight too.

Having just read the above, I'd love to hear your opinion of Athlone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭photty

yeah I've always found athlone a bit odd. The way the river splits it in two seems to give the impression theres no town centre. Still the new rail/bus station is well done ;)

How could you mention Athlone without filling us in on the cultural centre that is Golden Island.
