    From Unison.ie:
IRELAND'S largest mobile phone player Vodafone has been granted more time to consider its acceptance of one of the two 'B' 3G licences it has been granted by the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation (ODTR).

Under the terms of the tender rules, the ODTR has granted Vodafone an extension until September 12 following O2's acceptance of the licence on Wednesday.

Vodafone's Irish mobile arm O2 paid the initial fee of €44.4m for its 'B' licence, within the original time frame set by the regulator.

Earlier this year, Hong-Kong giant Hutchison Whampoa was awarded a 3G 'A' licence which provides for at least 80pc population coverage.

The 'B' licence includes minimum requirements of 33pc demographic coverage to be fulfilled by the end of June 2006, and 53pc demographic coverage to be fulfilled by the end of June 2008.

The total licence fee is €114.1m phased over 15 years with the first instalment of €44.4m to be paid up-front.

While Vodafone has said it is committed to 3G in Ireland, there have been concerns that the cash-strapped telco could be looking at its options in terms of 3G, although analysts said it would be an unusual move for the company to walk away from opportunities in the Irish market.

Just last week, the Vodafone Group said it will not be launching any 3G services outside Japan this year.

The 3G saga has been dragging out around Europe, especially in the last year as telcos reassess the cost and the lagging technology.

A number of other companies around Europe have announced delays in the rollout of 3G services, including Sonera.

I hope this is of interest, dont like wasting threads ;)
