We're using 802.11b to send video to plasma screen signs in Kilkenny during the Kilkenny Arts Week. The main Internet signal comes from an ISDN dialup. The signs display content that you can change with your mobile phone. It's like using your mobile to be a remote for your television. Except we use your mobile to send IVR signals to Cork, where they're converted to query strings by a servlet, then pushed to Kilkenny. If a Kilkenny sign needs info that's not cached, the sign grabs it over IP and loads it for playing.

The WiFi links let us put signs in streets without cabling them. People using them don't even know they've had an Internet experience when they've finished pushing the buttons on their mobile phones.

The system will run until 18 August, so if you fancy Kilkenny Arts, you might like talking to signs in Kilkenny too.
