How can i restrict a users access in win98, ok here`s the situ:

I work in Net Cafe running Win98 machines, users come along and install any old crap they want(spy ware, kazaa etc.) and i`m left to clean it up(grrrrrr)

Warnings are not adhered to here - so ze final zolution shall be to restrict users so they can`t install anything without a password/permission/admin etc..

Any one know of any proggies that do this or a blantanly easier way.

Upgrading the OS is not an option here.

Windows 95 and 98 had a program called poledit.exe (Policy Editor).

With that you can pretty much restrict anything. A company I worked for implemented policies in 95, and they worked very well. They can be bypassed (as I discovered after a couple of days of trying!), but the average user wouldn't be able to figure it out.

All you have to do is include the policy in your login script.

Here's a couple of links to get you started....

    Hope this helps,
    Dave.

another option is to make a clean install of win98,install everything you need and make an image of it. so it's just a few mouse clicks away from being a clean machine again :) i'd recommend PowerQuest Drive Image Pro. i use it here for win2k and i can have a clean build in 20-30 mins. it seems like a lot of work, but it's mostly automated..you can kick multiple rebuilds off at once.

if ya want anymore info just PM me
