Just wondering if we could draw up a list of those to whom the likes of me with my pigeon French, could turn to for assistance.
Add your name if you wish to volunteer.

I'll start off by putting down ZeFrog, who did volunteer in another thread on this forum.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?postid=557495#post557495

I was going to add Beruthiel, but it seems she is a bit modest;)

    The list so far:
    ZeFrog
    Jabba
    dun_do_bheal

Could this be made a sticky maybe?

oh please Samson, I may speak a little bit, but I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with what I say to be gospel!
and, as I stated before, me spelling is a disgrace! I will help out where I can and I have sources who will be able to help out, ie: zefrog!
also, I believe Wook is from Belgium he has already told me on another post that I am beyond help! :D

you know, I would really be up for learning some verbs, most people know the present tense, but it's the past and future that I have no clue about!
so.... the only one I have had a bash at is 'to have'
    avez
    I have - j'ai
    I had - j'avez
    I will have - j'aurais

(someone correct the spelling if it's wrong!
(should we have a different thread for verbs?)

I had can be either J'ai eu or j'avais. Both are past - it just depends on the context.

I would have is the conditional - you might be getting mixed up because the conditional takes the same endings as the imperfect (ais, ais, ait..), but with the er/ir/r(e) ending still intact.

So j'aurais is I would have.

imparfait is more a narrative form.
when you want say something from the past in an active form, you have to use the passé-composé.

    example :

    j'avais de la chance (narrative)

    j'ai eu de la chance.

i notice that for this sentense :

"j'avais de la chance" is more general.
"j'ai eu de la chance" is more precise.

    j'ai - i have
    j'avais - i had (imparfait..used for description; explanation,)
j'ai eu- i had (passé composé)
    j'aurais - i would have
    j'aurai - i will have

You can add me if you like. I'm Irish, now living in France for over 4 years. Fluent in everyday French and quite a bit of scientific French.

Bon courage à vous tous !

Moi, je viens de trouver cette forum. En francais Je peux lire assez facilement mais je ne peut pas ecriver. Pas de tout.

[What I tried to say above was: I have just discovered this forum. In French I can read easily (well) but I cannot write. Not at all.]

Comment on dit: "I would welcome corrections of my mis-use of words, my spelling and grammar."

Hi kennethbolger, contact Blanchardstown library. An informal french conversation group will be commencing from September. Also, keep an eye on this thread for details

Hi everyone, forum doesn't seem too hectic, but since I'm spending a lot more time on boards recently, thought I could add my name to your list. I'm around, so might as well.
I'm French, from Lyon, have been living in Ireland 15 years, et donc je peux vous aider si vous avez besoin d'une traduction ou quoi que ce soit (euh, enfin pas trois pages, hein ? ;) et pas les devoirs svp, sauf si c'est juste pour donner un p'tit coup de pouce/a little nudge in the right direction)

N'hesitez pas ! Ca me fera plaisir d'aider quelques uns.

Same as above. Only been in Dublin for a year, but if you need any (non-homework related :p) assistance, I'd be glad to help. And perhaps trade it for some assistance in my quest for an teanga an-chasta.

    N'hésitez pas à me MP !

These are some of the on-line reference dictionaries I use (but if you need something a bit more specialised I could try and find one)
    http://dictionnaire.reverso.net/
http://www.linguee.fr/francais-anglais/search - where they give a complete glossary in context (like on Pota Focal)
as Canada is officially at least bilingual they have the TermiumPlus wordbank though obviously what they give isn't always exactly what you would find in use in France.
    http://www.le-dictionnaire.com
http://www.lexilogos.com/francais_langue_dictionnaires.htm (though of course they have lots of information on many other languages including Irish)

I am willing to help. Jeanne

PS: Reminder serious students, Giant Book Fair ends on Saturday, your chance to pick a book to inspire and motivate.
For verbs I find the conjugaison nouvelobs site very reliable.

For verb conjugations, Le Figaro has a brilliant Android app called Le Conjugeur:

Not sure if it's available for iPhone.

Been using boards for quite some time and only about discovered this forum. French native from the mediterranean area, I spent 6 years in Dublin (notably for completing my PhD ) and did give "informal" French lessons to some mates.

Like Mountainsandh wrote some years ago, I'd be happy to help out if it's not 3 pages of text or tons of homework :p;).

    It depends on the sentence.

J'avais un chien quand j'étais petit (I HAD a dog when I was small)

J'ai eu mon permis de conduire à seize ans - I had my driving licence at sixteen.

The first is more long term.
